Bitcoin information

Bitcoin price history

  • In 2009 – The Bitcoin network was launched by the anonymous person or group known as Satoshi Nakamoto.
  • In 2010 – This year the first known commercial Bitcoin transaction took place. A programmer named Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas on May 22, 2010. Since then, this day has been known as Bitcoin Pizza Day. In July of that year, Bitcoin began trading on online exchanges at a starting price of about €0.0008 per BTC.
  • In 2012 – In November, the first ‘Bitcoin Halving’ took place. During this event, the reward for miners was cut in half from 50 to 25 BTC per block. The Bitcoin halving slowed the issuance of new bitcoins, which according to Nakamoto creates scarcity. In 2013, Bitcoin broke through the €100 mark for the first time and then quickly surged to around €1,000.
  • In 2014 – After the peak in 2013, the Bitcoin price dropped in 2014 to €300, partly due to the infamous hack of the Mt. Gox exchange, in which about 850,000 BTC were lost.
  • In 2016 – In July, the second Bitcoin halving took place. The reward for miners was halved from 25 to 12.5 BTC per block. This created a new period of scarcity and laid the foundation for the 2017 bull run.
  • In 2017 – 2017 was the year of a new all-time high for the Bitcoin price. In January, Bitcoin again broke through the €1,000 mark. In August, the Segregated Witness (SegWit) update was activated, an important technical upgrade that made transactions more efficient and laid the groundwork for the Lightning Network. 2017 also saw the big ICO boom, with thousands of new crypto projects emerging. Since investors often had to buy Bitcoin first to participate in ICOs, demand surged, driving the price higher. In December, Bitcoin reached a then-record high of nearly €20,000.
  • In 2018 – After a successful bull run in 2017 and early 2018, the market entered a bear market. In March, the Lightning Network was officially rolled out, making Bitcoin transactions faster and cheaper and positioning Bitcoin better as a payment method. Despite this innovation, the price fell throughout the year and reached a low of about €3,200 in December.
  • In 2019 – After the heavy losses in 2018, the Bitcoin price recovered in 2019 and managed to reach €13,800 in June. In September, Bakkt was also launched, a Bitcoin futures platform backed by ICE, further opening the door for institutional investors.
  • In 2020 – 2020 marked the beginning of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The Bitcoin price initially reacted poorly, briefly dropping below €4,000, but quickly recovered in the following months. In May, the third Bitcoin halving took place, reducing the reward per block from 12.5 to 6.25 BTC.
  • In 2021 – After a difficult year in 2020, the crypto market entered another bull run. In January, Bitcoin crossed the €40,000 mark. In February, Tesla announced it had invested $1.5 billion in Bitcoin and would temporarily accept BTC payments, sparking another price surge. In April, a new record was set above €63,000. In May, however, the price fell to about €30,000 after Elon Musk’s comments on the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining and due to increasing regulatory pressure from China. In September, El Salvador made history by becoming the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender. Driven by growing adoption, Bitcoin reached a new all-time high of around €69,000 in November. That same year, the Taproot update was implemented, bringing improvements in privacy, scalability, and smart contract functionality.
  • In 2024 – After a bear market in 2022 and 2023, during which the price fell to around €15,000 following the collapse of Terra/LUNA and the FTX debacle, severely undermining confidence in the crypto market, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) finally approved the trading of Bitcoin ETFs in January. This led to an inflow of institutional money and encouraged further adoption. In April, the fourth Bitcoin halving took place, reducing the block reward from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC. As a result, the price rose toward about €60,000.
  • In 2025 – In January 2025, Bitcoin continued its upward trend and reached a peak of nearly €110,000. This surge was partly driven by statements from the new U.S. president Donald Trump, who expressed his ambition to make the United States the crypto capital of the world.
