Ethereum Price History


  • In 2015 - The Ethereum network was launched in July 2015 with the release of the Frontier version, but in 2014 Vitalik Buterin had already presented the idea of Ethereum: A cryptocurrency that not only allows payments, but also the execution of smart contracts. The ETH price started at around €0.70 and rose to nearly €1 by the end of the year.
  • In 2016 - Two major events took place in 2016, namely the DAO hack and the hard fork. The DAO hack occurred in June 2016, in which about 3.6 million ETH was stolen. Due to a disagreement in the community caused by the DAO hack, the blockchain split in two: Ethereum (ETH) and Ethereum Classic. Because of these two events, the price dropped from over €18 to about €7.
  • In 2017 - The popularity of ICOs in 2017 caused Ethereum to reach a peak. ETH broke through €50 for the first time in March 2017, but kept rising: in January 2018 it even reached a new all-time high of no less than €800.
  • In 2018 - After the peak in January, the entire crypto market entered a bear market, with the ETH price falling to €90 in December 2018.
  • In 2020 - The rise of DeFi projects such as Uniswap and Aave gave Ethereum a new hype. However, the corona crash caused ETH to drop to €110, but by the end of the year the ETH price was already above €1,000 again.
  • In 2021 - Due to the rise of NFTs combined with the bull market, Ethereum experienced strong growth in 2021. For example, the price first peaked around €2,300 in April 2021, but later that year the ETH price even rose to a new all-time high of more than €4,000.
  • In 2022 - In 2022 Ethereum dropped back to €1,000. This was due to the collapse of Terra Luna and FTX. In addition, The Merge took place, in which Ethereum transitioned from Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake. Despite Ethereum’s major milestone, the price fluctuated between €1,100 and €1,800.
  • In 2024 - After the approval of the Bitcoin ETF in January 2024, the SEC also approved the first Ethereum ETFs in May 2024. This led to a strong inflow of institutional capital into ETH. The expectation of the Ethereum ETF approval had already caused a rise, namely to €3,500, and in December ETH even rose to over €3,700.
  • In 2025 - At the beginning of 2025, Ethereum saw a major market correction due to, among other things, the macroeconomic shock caused by the Trump tariffs and institutional outflow from Ethereum ETFs, and therefore dropped back to €1,400. Later in 2025, Ethereum managed to recover thanks to the growing adoption of tokenization on Ethereum and the popularity of Layer-2 networks (such as Arbitrum and Optimism): Ethereum reached a new all-time high in July 2025 of about €4,080. In the second half of the year, volatility increased due to macroeconomic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, including the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas and escalations involving Iran. The ETH price was still around €4,000 on July 10, 2025, but closed the year at approximately €2,500, representing a decline of about 37% in less than half a year.
  • In 2026 (to date) - The downward trend continued into early 2026. In February, Ethereum dropped to around €1,550. One of the contributing factors was the further escalation of the conflict between the United States and Iran. Rising oil prices and inflation concerns put additional pressure on risk assets such as Ethereum. The price partially recovered in March, with Ethereum trading around €1,900 by the end of the month.
