What is Yearn (YFI)?

Yearn (YFI) is a decentralized DeFi platform that offers yVaults. These are automated vaults where you can deposit crypto to earn yield and put your assets to work.

Simply put: you deposit crypto into a yVault, and that vault automatically puts the funds into strategies that try to generate interest or yield. The platform is meant for users who want their stablecoins or other crypto assets to be automatically used in DeFi strategies that try to generate yield.

Developers and strategists also play a role. They build the yield strategies behind the protocol. In addition, YFI token holders have influence through governance, which means they can vote on decisions within the protocol. Yearn is also known for its “fair launch,” in which no YFI was reserved for founders or venture capital firms.

How does Yearn (YFI) work?

Yearn (YFI) mainly works with automated yVaults. When you deposit something, the vault converts it into shares. After that, the capital is distributed across one or more strategies that try to generate yield.

Those strategies work via smart contracts and deploy the deposited capital across different DeFi protocols to seek yield. Yearn V3 uses standardized vaults based on ERC-4626 for this. A vault can distribute capital across multiple strategies and adjusts that allocation when needed.

YFI is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. The vaults and other parts of Yearn can also be deployed on different EVM networks. It does not have its own consensus layer, so the security and control come from the blockchain on which the contracts are deployed. On Ethereum, the network has operated with proof-of-stake since The Merge.

YFI is Yearn's governance token. Users can lock YFI for veYFI, which gives them voting rights within the protocol's governance. The longer YFI is locked, the greater the user's voting weight. At the original fair launch, 30,000 YFI were issued. In 2021, the community approved a one-time issuance of 6,666 additional YFI. This brought the total supply to 36,666 YFI.

Who are the founders of Yearn?

Yearn was founded in 2020 by Andre Cronje. Cronje is a developer with experience in fintech and DeFi. He started Yearn as an open-source tool under the name iEarn/Yearn. The project was then publicly launched in July 2020 through a YFI fair launch, after which the community took it over and continued developing it.
