Additional Information about Request (REQ)

What is Request (REQ)?

Request is an open-source protocol for non-custodial crypto payments. The platform makes it possible to create payment requests, receive payments, and automatically link transactions to, for example, an invoice number or other payment reference.

Non-custodial means that Request does not hold the funds itself. A payment goes directly from the payer's crypto wallet to the recipient's wallet.

Request now mainly focuses on stablecoin payments for businesses and developers. Through the Dashboard, payment pages, and an API, SaaS companies, iGaming platforms, and payment service providers, among others, can receive and send payments.

The protocol supports multiple blockchains and can automatically link payments to the correct payment requests. This allows businesses to check and process transactions more easily without having to manage a central payment system themselves.

REQ is the token of the Request Network ecosystem. The token is used for governance and is partially burned when new requests are stored via the protocol.

How does Request (REQ) work?

With Request, a digital payment request is created first. This can include the recipient, the amount, the currency, and a payment reference. A company can create such a request via the Dashboard or programmatically via the API.

The data of a Request request is stored via the Request Network. The request data is stored on IPFS, while hashes of this data are recorded on Gnosis Chain. This makes it possible to later verify whether a Request request has been changed and what its current status is.

The actual payment does not have to take place on the same blockchain. Request supports payments on multiple EVM networks and on Tron. The protocol can then check which on-chain transaction belongs to which payment request and automatically update the status.

Users remain in control of their crypto. The funds are sent directly to the recipient's wallet and Request does not hold the paid assets in custody itself.

Request also supports cross-chain payments. For example, a user can pay with USDT on one blockchain while the recipient receives USDC on another blockchain. Request uses Li.Fi for this to find suitable swap and bridge routes.

For different payment flows, Request uses smart contracts that can process, among other things, payment references, token transfers and certain fees. Request does not have its own blockchain or consensus mechanism; the actual payments are secured by the blockchain on which they take place.

REQ is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum with an original fixed supply of 1,000,000,000 REQ. No new tokens are issued. When a Request is stored on-chain via the protocol, a protocol fee in REQ is burned. As a result, the total supply can decrease over time.

REQ also gives holders governance rights over the protocol and the Request Network Foundation. There is no native staking mechanism for REQ.

Who are the founders of Request?

Request Network was founded in 2017 by Etienne Tatur and Christophe Lassuyt.

Etienne Tatur is a co-founder and has a technical background. Before Request, he was, among other things, co-founder and CTO of Moneytis and worked as a developer on various software and blockchain projects.

Christophe Lassuyt is a co-founder and has a background in finance and business operations. He was also previously involved with Moneytis, where the team gained experience with international payments.

From that experience, the idea for Request Network emerged: an open infrastructure that allows users and businesses to record payment requests and execute payments directly between wallets.

Request Network was launched in 2017 and the Request Network Foundation was founded in Switzerland that same year.
