What is Lisk (LSK)?

Lisk is a Layer 2 blockchain in the Ethereum ecosystem. The network is built with Optimism's OP Stack and is part of the Superchain. As a result, Lisk combines low transaction costs with compatibility with Ethereum and the security of Ethereum as the underlying blockchain.

Lisk mainly focuses on developers and founders building blockchain applications for fast-growing markets, including Africa, Southeast Asia and Latin America. The emphasis is on applications that try to solve real economic problems, including RWA, payments and DePIN.

Because Lisk is EVM-equivalent, developers can use familiar Ethereum tools and programming languages such as Solidity. Applications and smart contracts developed for Ethereum can therefore be deployed on Lisk relatively easily.

Lisk started in 2016 as its own Layer 1 blockchain with a strong focus on JavaScript and TypeScript. In 2024, this original blockchain was shut down and the project migrated to the current Ethereum Layer 2.

How does Lisk (LSK) work?

Lisk is now an Ethereum Layer 2 built with Optimism's OP Stack. Transactions are first processed on Lisk and then bundled, after which data about these transactions is sent to Ethereum. This allows Lisk to process transactions more cheaply while using Ethereum as the underlying settlement and security layer.

The network is EVM-equivalent. Developers can therefore use Ethereum-smart contracts and familiar tools such as Solidity, Hardhat and Foundry. With this, Lisk has replaced the old development environment around the Lisk SDK as the basis for new applications.

Lisk uses the optimistic rollup architecture of the OP Stack. Transaction data from Layer 2 is published on Ethereum and the system uses fault proofs to challenge invalid state transitions. As a result, Lisk no longer has the former Layer 1's own validator and forger model.

On the old Lisk Layer 1, Delegated Proof of Stake was used. LSK holders voted for validators there that produced blocks. This system was ended when Lisk migrated to the current Layer 2 in 2024.

During this migration, LSK was converted into an ERC-20 token. The token is now mainly used for staking and governance within the Lisk DAO. Users can lock LSK for a certain period to receive voting rights and staking rewards.

LSK is not the native gas token of Lisk. Transaction fees on the Lisk Layer 2 are normally paid in ETH.

Before the migration, a maximum token supply of 400,000,000 LSK was set. Of this, 100 million tokens were reserved for possible future funding of the Lisk DAO. In 2025, the community voted to burn these tokens, but the proposal did not reach the required quorum. The tokens were therefore not burned.

Who are the founders of Lisk?

Lisk was founded in 2016 by Max Kordek and Oliver Beddows. The project was launched that same year after an ICO.

Max Kordek is a co-founder of Lisk and has been closely involved in the strategy and development of the project from the start. At the end of 2025, he returned as full-time CEO of Lisk.

Oliver Beddows is a co-founder and was originally CTO of Lisk. He played an important role in the technical development of the original blockchain. At the end of 2025, he also returned full-time, as Chief Strategy Officer.

Kordek and Beddows also founded the Lisk Foundation in Zug, Switzerland in 2016. This organization was transformed into the Onchain Foundation in 2023, which supports the further development of Lisk.

Lisk started as an independent Layer 1 blockchain that aimed to make blockchain development with JavaScript and TypeScript more accessible. In 2024, this original chain was shut down and Lisk migrated to an Ethereum Layer 2 on the OP Stack.
