Additional Information about Liquity (LQTY)

What is Liquity (LQTY)?

Liquity is a decentralized lending protocol on Ethereum that lets users borrow stablecoins by locking up crypto as collateral. The protocol has two versions, each with its own stablecoin: LUSD in Liquity V1 and BOLD in Liquity V2.

Liquity V1 makes it possible to borrow LUSD against ETH as collateral without paying ongoing interest. Users do need to keep enough collateral in place. The minimum collateral ratio is 110%, which means a loan must always be backed by more than 100% in ETH.

Liquity V2 supports not only ETH but also the liquid staking tokens wstETH and rETH. In V2, users do pay interest, but they can choose the interest rate they want to set for their loan. As a result, the interest model works differently from traditional lending protocols, where interest is determined automatically by supply and demand.

With Liquity, ETH holders can unlock liquidity without first selling their collateral. In addition, users can deposit LUSD or BOLD into Stability Pools to support the protocol's liquidation system.

LQTY is the second token in the Liquity ecosystem. The token can be staked and plays a role in Liquity V2 by distributing incentives for BOLD liquidity.

How does Liquity (LQTY) work?

Liquity works with so-called Troves. These are personal lending positions in which a user locks up collateral and can borrow stablecoins against it. In Liquity V1, a user locks up ETH and mints LUSD. In Liquity V2, ETH, wstETH or rETH can be used as collateral to borrow BOLD.

The two versions have different interest models. V1 does not charge ongoing interest on the loan, but it can charge a one-time borrowing fee. In V2, the user determines the annual interest rate of the BOLD loan themselves.

To keep the system sufficiently collateralized, Liquity uses Stability Pools. Users can deposit LUSD in V1 or BOLD in V2 there. When a risky Trove is liquidated, stablecoin from the relevant Stability Pool is used to repay and burn the debt. In return, depositors receive part of the collateral from the liquidated position.

Liquity also uses redemptions to keep the stablecoins around their value of one US dollar. In this process, a user can exchange LUSD or BOLD for collateral from the protocol. In V2, loans with relatively low set interest rates are matched first.

Liquity runs on Ethereum via smart contracts and has no own consensus mechanism. The execution and security of the core contracts therefore depend on Ethereum.

LQTY has different functions in V1 and V2. In V1, users can stake LQTY to receive a share of the borrowing and redemption fees in LUSD and ETH. V1 has no governance and LQTY is not used there to vote on protocol changes.

LQTY has a maximum supply of 100,000,000 tokens.

Who are the founders of Liquity?

Liquity was founded by Robert Lauko and Rick Pardoe.

Robert Lauko is the founder of Liquity. He has a whitepaper and research background and earned a PhD in law. Before Liquity, he worked as a researcher at DFINITY.

Rick Pardoe is co-founder and Lead Engineer of Liquity. He has an academic background in physics and economics and specializes in the development of smart contracts with Solidity.

Liquity was publicly announced in 2020. The original Liquity protocol, now called Liquity V1, went live on Ethereum on 5 April 2021. In May 2025, the current version of Liquity V2 followed, with BOLD, support for ETH and liquid staking tokens, and user-set interest rates.
