Additional Information about Horizen (ZEN)

What Is Horizen?

Horizen is a crypto project focused on privacy, zero-knowledge technology, and scalable blockchain applications. The project originally started as ZenCash, but later grew into Horizen: a broader ecosystem for privacy-focused applications and blockchain infrastructure.

Privacy is a key part of Horizen. The project uses zero-knowledge technology, which makes it possible to verify information without having to reveal all underlying data. This is especially useful for applications where users or businesses want to use or validate data without making everything visible on a public blockchain.

Over the years, Horizen has gone through several technical phases. At first, the project had its own blockchain. Later, Horizen EON was introduced, an EVM-compatible network for smart contracts. In 2025, Horizen migrated to Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 network. Since then, ZEN has existed as an ERC-20 token on Base.

Simply put, Horizen is built to:

  • Support privacy-friendly blockchain applications
  • Make zero-knowledge technology more accessible
  • Help developers build scalable Web3 applications
  • Give DeFi applications more privacy and flexibility
  • Make ZEN usable within the Base ecosystem

Horizen stands out because it has been active since 2017 and has consistently focused on privacy and scalability. With the migration to Base, the project aims to better align with the Ethereum ecosystem and enable new use cases in DeFi, privacy, and on-chain infrastructure.

How Does Horizen (ZEN) Work?

Horizen works differently today than it did in the project’s early years. Originally, Horizen ran on its own blockchain with its own node infrastructure. The project later introduced EON, an EVM-compatible environment for smart contracts. In 2025, ZEN migrated to Base, meaning the token now operates as an ERC-20 token within the Ethereum ecosystem.

At its core, Horizen remains focused on privacy-oriented blockchain infrastructure. The project uses zero-knowledge technology to build applications where information can be verified without having to make all data public. This can be useful, for example, for DeFi, compliance, identity, and enterprise blockchain applications.

After the migration to Base, ZEN transactions are no longer processed via the old Horizen mainchain. Instead, ZEN transfers are executed as ERC-20 transactions on Base. Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 network built to make transactions faster and cheaper than transacting directly on Ethereum mainnet.

By moving to Base, Horizen has become more connected to the Ethereum ecosystem. This makes it easier to use ZEN within DeFi applications and other EVM-compatible use cases.

What Is the ZEN Token?

ZEN is the token of the Horizen ecosystem. The token was originally used on Horizen’s own blockchain, but migrated to Base in 2025. Since that migration, ZEN has existed as an ERC-20 token on Base.

An ERC-20 token is a token that uses a widely adopted standard within the Ethereum ecosystem. Because Base is EVM-compatible, ERC-20 tokens like ZEN can be used in wallets, trading platforms, and DeFi applications that support the Base network.

Within the Horizen ecosystem, ZEN can be used for transactions, liquidity, and participation in applications being built around Horizen. By moving to Base, ZEN can be integrated more easily into DeFi, such as decentralized exchanges and liquidity pools.

In short:

  • ZEN is the token of the Horizen ecosystem
  • Since 2025, ZEN has existed as an ERC-20 token on Base
  • Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 network
  • ZEN can be used within the Base and Ethereum ecosystems
  • The token plays a role in DeFi, liquidity, and privacy-focused applications around Horizen

Who Are the Founders of Horizen?

Horizen was originally launched in 2017 under the name ZenCash. The project was co-founded by Rob Viglione and Rolf Versluis. ZenCash was later renamed Horizen because the project was no longer focused only on digital payments, but on a broader ecosystem for privacy, sidechains, and blockchain applications.

Rob Viglione is one of the most recognizable figures behind Horizen. He is also involved with Horizen Labs, an organization focused on blockchain infrastructure, zero-knowledge technology, and Web3 solutions. Rolf Versluis played an important role in the project’s early stage and in the development of the original Horizen network.

The project launched in 2017, making it older than many other crypto projects focused on privacy and zero-knowledge technology. In 2025, Horizen went through a major change with the migration of ZEN to Base. This shifted ZEN from a coin on its own blockchain to an ERC-20 token within the Ethereum ecosystem.

Today, Horizen primarily focuses on privacy-focused infrastructure, zero-knowledge technology, and applications within DeFi and Web3. The migration to Base is intended to make the project more accessible to developers, users, and applications across the broader Ethereum ecosystem.
