Additional Information about Gains Network (GNS)

What is Gains Network (GNS)?

Gains Network is the protocol behind gTrade, a decentralized trading platform for leveraged trading. Through gTrade, users can trade with leverage in, among other things, crypto, forex, stocks, commodities and indices.

The trading is synthetic. This means that users do not directly buy the underlying asset and that a different trader is not needed as the counterparty for every trade. Instead, gTrade uses so-called gToken vaults. These vaults contain liquidity that can be used to pay out traders' profits. Traders' losses, on the other hand, flow back into the vaults.

The platform focuses on traders and liquidity providers. Traders can open long and short positions with leverage, while liquidity providers can deposit assets into gToken vaults and receive a share of the trading revenue in return.

GNS is the utility token of Gains Network. The token plays a role in staking and also forms an economic backstop for the gToken vaults. A portion of gTrade's revenue is used to buy back and burn GNS.

How does Gains Network (GNS) work?

Gains Network uses a synthetic peer-to-pool model. When a user opens a position via gTrade, a gToken vault is the financial counterparty to that trade. If the trader wins, the profit is paid out from the vault. If the trader loses, the loss goes to the vault.

Liquidity providers deposit assets into these vaults and receive gTokens in return. A gToken represents a share in the relevant vault. The value of this position is influenced by trading revenue and the profits and losses of traders.

gTrade uses oracles to receive current market prices. This price data is used for, among other things, opening and closing positions, liquidations and calculating profit and loss. As a result, gTrade can offer synthetic markets without the protocol having to own the underlying stocks, currencies or commodities itself.

The smart contracts of Gains Network run on various EVM networks, including Arbitrum, Base, Polygon, ApeChain and MegaETH. Gains Network does not have its own blockchain or consensus mechanism and therefore relies on the security of the blockchain on which a trade is executed.

GNS is an ERC-20 token and forms an economic backstop for the protocol. When a gToken vault has insufficient collateral, new GNS can be issued according to the protocol rules to support the vault. A limit of a maximum of 0.05% of the total GNS supply per 24 hours applies to this.

When the protocol does have sufficient revenue and collateral, GNS can be bought back and burned. A large part of the trading revenue is currently used for this buyback-and-burn function. Users can also stake GNS within Gains Network.

The maximum supply is capped at 100,000,000 GNS.

Who are the founders of Gains Network?

Gains Network was founded by a pseudonymous developer known as Seb. His full identity is not publicly known.

Seb built the first version of the protocol largely on his own. The project started as Gains Farm and later developed into Gains Network, with gTrade as the main trading platform.

In 2021, the original GFARM2 token was replaced by GNS. In the years that followed, the team around Gains Network grew and gTrade expanded to multiple blockchains and hundreds of synthetic trading markets.

Seb is explicitly named as the founder in the official documentation of Gains Network. Other early team members are not referred to as co-founders.
