What is Bonfida (FIDA)?

Bonfida, abbreviated SNS, is a name and identity protocol on Solana. Its best-known feature is .sol domains. These let users replace a long wallet address with an easy-to-read name, such as name.sol.

A .sol domain can be linked to a Solana wallet and used to send and receive crypto. In addition, users can link other data to their domain and use it as part of their on-chain identity. Domains can also be bought and sold through the SNS marketplace.

SNS originated from Bonfida, a project that developed various products within the Solana ecosystem from 2020 onward. From 2024, the focus shifted entirely to Bonfida and .sol domains.

FIDA was originally the token of the broader Bonfida ecosystem. Since 2025, Bonfida has used the new SNS token as its main community token. FIDA still exists and can, among other things, be used to receive a 5% discount when registering a .sol domain.

How does Bonfida (FIDA) work?

Bonfida links readable .sol domains to data on Solana. Via smart contracts, users can register a domain and, for example, link it to a wallet address. Applications and wallets can then read the .sol domain and automatically find the associated address.

This allows a user, for example, to send crypto to name.sol instead of copying a long Solana address. A .sol domain can also be used for an on-chain profile and other data that form part of a digital identity.

Developers can integrate SNS into their own applications via SDKs and APIs. The protocol is supported, among other things, by various wallets and other applications within the Solana ecosystem.

SNS does not have its own blockchain or consensus mechanism. Registrations, transfers and changes to domains are carried out on Solana. As a result, the protocol relies on Solana's validators and security. Solana combines Proof of History with a Proof-of-Stake-based consensus model.

FIDA is an SPL token on Solana and was originally the main utility token of Bonfida. Today, the token has a more limited role within SNS. Users who register a .sol domain with FIDA, for example, receive a 5% discount.

Since 2025, Bonfida also has the SNS token. This token was specifically developed for the current .sol community and plays a central role in community participation, rewards and governance within the SNS ecosystem.

Who are the founders of Bonfida?

Bonfida emerged from Bonfida, which was founded in 2020 by David Ratiney.

Ratiney has a background in computer engineering and studied at the University of Cambridge. He became interested in Solana and the then Serum DEX and started Bonfida to build user-friendly applications for the young Solana ecosystem.

Bonfida initially developed various products, including trading software and tools for Serum. Later, Bonfida grew into one of the project's most important components. From 2024, the name Bonfida was increasingly replaced by Bonfida and the focus shifted entirely to .sol domains and on-chain identity.

David Ratiney can therefore be described as the founder of the original Bonfida project behind Bonfida.
