Additional Information about Bancor (BNT)

What is Bancor (BNT)?

Bancor is an on-chain liquidity protocol. In simple terms, it helps with direct token swaps. It works as a decentralized trading layer, also known as an AMM. That is a system that makes trading possible without a traditional exchange in between.

The protocol is mainly intended for people who want to provide liquidity, traders, and token projects. Liquidity providers can use it to make funds available on the blockchain. Bancor tries to make that easier by also supporting single-sided liquidity. That means you do not always have to deposit two different tokens at the same time.

An important component is BNT. The token is used in pools as a kind of shared counterparty. Bancor also uses the Omnipool or Omni structure, as in Bancor v3 and Carbon DeFi. As a result, liquidity within the network can be distributed and used more broadly.

How does Bancor (BNT) work?

Bancor works with smart contracts. These are automated contracts on the blockchain. They manage the liquidity pools and the smart tokens. The protocol uses pools that are denominated in BNT. BNT is the shared layer through which token conversions and liquidity routing take place.

The protocol supports single-sided staking. That means you can provide liquidity with one token. Bancor also has protection against impermanent loss. Impermanent loss is the risk that you end up with less value because the price of tokens in a pool changes. Within the protocol, this loss can be compensated through the built-in mechanisms.

The Bancor v3 and Omnipool structure, as used in Carbon DeFi, routes trading flows through this shared BNT liquidity layer. In addition, there are extra components, such as the Arb Fast Lane for arbitrage on the blockchain and mechanisms for minting and burning BNT. BNT is used for liquidity provision, staking and governance. Users can stake BNT to receive bnBNT or vBNT. vBNT gives voting rights within governance.

BNT is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. The core smart contracts of Bancor run on the EVM. The protocol has also been deployed on multiple EVM-compatible chains. Bancor itself does not have its own consensus layer. It relies on the consensus of the blockchain on which the smart contracts run. On Ethereum, execution and finality therefore depend on Ethereum itself.

Who are the founders of Bancor?

Bancor was launched in 2017 by Eyal Hertzog, Guy Benartzi and Galia Benartzi. They were part of the original founding team and were also the authors of the whitepaper in which the Bancor Protocol was described.

The team developed Bancor as a protocol that allowed tokens to be traded automatically via smart contracts, without requiring a buyer and seller to be directly matched for every transaction.

In June 2017, Bancor held its Token Generation Event. Around 153 million dollars was raised and the first BNT tokens were issued.
