What is Verge (XVG)?

Verge (XVG) is an open-source crypto project built by the community and focused on privacy and payments. The network is designed for fast, low-cost peer-to-peer payments. This means users can send money directly to each other without an intermediary.

Unlike fully anonymous privacy coins, Verge uses optional privacy. By default, Verge uses the Tor network to hide users' IP addresses during network communication. Users can also use Dual-Key Stealth Addresses. This creates a one-time, hidden receiving address for a payment, making it harder to link transactions on the blockchain to the recipient's fixed wallet address.

Verge focuses on everyday users and merchants who want more privacy options and low transaction costs for their daily payments.

How does Verge (XVG) work?

Verge runs on its own proof-of-work blockchain. A unique feature of Verge is that the network supports five different mining algorithms at the same time, including Scrypt, X17 and Lyra2rev2. This allows different types of hardware, such as GPUs and ASICs, to secure the network, which promotes decentralization.

When you send a payment, you can choose a public or shielded transaction. Verge wallets integrate Tor routing by default to hide IP addresses. For the addresses themselves, Dual-Key Stealth Addresses are used, formerly known under the umbrella name Wraith Protocol, making payments not easily traceable to a public wallet.

The network experienced exploits around the mining algorithms in 2018, after which security was tightened through patches and hard forks. The block time is very fast at about 30 seconds and XVG is the native token. There was no ICO or pre-mine and the maximum supply is capped at 16.5 billion XVG. In addition, Verge supports cross-chain atomic swaps and XVG is also available via bridges on networks such as Ethereum and BNB Chain.

Who are the founders of Verge?

Verge was launched in 2014 by Justin Valo, known online better by his pseudonym Justin Vendetta or 'Sunerok'. He initially started the project under the name DogeCoinDark, with the aim of creating a more anonymous variant of Dogecoin.

In 2016, the project was renamed to Verge (XVG) to distance itself from the 'dark' association and focus more on a broad audience. Valo has a background in network security and the project is still maintained entirely by an open-source community of developers to this day.
