Additional Information about UMA (UMA)

What is UMA (UMA)?

UMA is an open-source oracle protocol that allows information from the real world to be verified and used on the blockchain.

An important part of UMA is the Optimistic Oracle. This lets applications verify the outcome of an event, what a certain price was at a specific moment, or whether certain conditions have been met.

The system initially assumes that the submitted information is correct. Only when someone objects is the outcome checked further. As a result, not every request needs to be thoroughly verified.

UMA is used, among other things, by prediction markets, insurance protocols, bridges and other financial applications that need information from outside their own blockchain.

How does UMA (UMA) work?

UMA works with an Optimistic Oracle. When an application needs information, one party can submit an answer and place a bond with it. This party is called the asserter.

A certain period then applies during which someone can object. If no one objects, the answer is considered correct. This allows many requests to be handled without requiring an extensive vote.

If someone disputes the answer, this party must also place a bond. The dispute is then forwarded to UMA's Data Verification Mechanism, or DVM. There, UMA stakers determine through a vote which outcome is correct.

These processes are carried out via smart contracts. The party that loses a dispute can lose its bond. UMA stakers who vote correctly can receive rewards. Anyone who votes incorrectly or does not participate in a required vote can lose part of their staked UMA.

UMA does not have its own blockchain. The DVM and the UMA token run on Ethereum. The oracle protocol can also be used by applications on other supported blockchains.

UMA is the governance and security token of the protocol. Users can stake UMA to participate in the DVM and vote on disputed cases and changes to the protocol. Through the DAO, important protocol parameters can also be adjusted.

The supply of UMA is not fixed. New tokens can be issued as staking rewards. The amount of this issuance is determined through governance.

Who are the founders of UMA?

UMA was founded in 2018 by Hart Lambur and Allison Lu. Hart Lambur and Allison Lu met while they were both working at Goldman Sachs. There they gained experience in financial markets and trading. Lambur also has a background in computer science and previously founded the financial technology company Openfolio. Lu has a background in economics and finance.

Together they started UMA with the idea of making financial contracts and market information accessible through blockchain technology. The project later increasingly developed into the oracle protocol that UMA is today.

Risk Labs Foundation is the team and foundation that supports the development of UMA.
