How does The Graph (GRT) work?

The Graph works by using subgraphs. These are open APIs that developers can use to retrieve and index blockchain data. The network consists of thousands of subgraphs, each focused on specific data from certain protocols or dApps. When a decentralized application (dApp) wants to retrieve specific data, such as transaction history or information about NFTs, the dApp can query the appropriate subgraph. The subgraph then provides the dApp with the relevant information. To use a subgraph, query fees must be paid, and this is where the native token of The Graph, GRT, plays an important role. Users pay query fees in GRT-tokens.

A small portion of these query fees is sent to the indexers, one of the three key roles in the system. The system consists of indexers, curators, and delegators. Here's an explanation of the three roles:

  • Indexers: nodes that host subgraphs and process queries.
  • Curators: users who indicate which subgraphs are valuable, so they get priority when being indexed.
  • Delegators: users who delegate their GRT-tokens to indexers to support the network and earn rewards.

GRT plays a crucial role since you need the tokens within the The Graph ecosystem to make the network function.

To work as an indexer, you need to stake GRT-tokens (lock them up for a longer period). In return, the indexer is paid in GRT-tokens (a portion of which comes from query fees).

You can also delegate your tokens to an indexer. By doing so, you contribute to the network without having to run a node yourself. Essentially, you're lending your tokens to an indexer. As a reward for lending, you'll get paid in GRT. You benefit from the earnings of the indexer you support.

Lastly, curators have a signaling role: they indicate which subgraphs are valuable and relevant by attaching GRT. Based on these signals, subgraphs receive priority when being indexed. Like indexers, curators receive a share of the query fees paid by users to subgraphs.

Who are the founders of The Graph?

The Graph was founded in 2018 by Yaniv Tal, Brandon Ramirez, and Jannis Pohlmann. They have experience in software development. In 2020, the protocol officially went live on the mainnet. Since the official launch, the developers have worked on further decentralizing the project by handing more responsibility over to the indexers.
