What is SuperRare (RARE)?

SuperRare is a curated platform for digital art. Artists can issue works there and collectors can buy, sell, and collect them as NFTs.

SuperRare first became known as a marketplace for unique 1/1 artworks. These works are still an important part of the platform, but SuperRare now also supports digital editions and other forms of on-chain art.

The platform focuses on artists, collectors, and curators. Only approved artists can issue art directly through SuperRare. In addition, when works are sold, artists can receive royalties if their work is later resold through SuperRare.

Another part of the platform is SuperRare Spaces. These are independent digital galleries managed by curators. They can select new artists, organize exhibitions, and sell art through their own Space.

RARE is the governance and curation token of the ecosystem. Token holders can participate via RareDAO in decisions about, among other things, the community and curation within SuperRare.

How does SuperRare (RARE) work?

SuperRare uses smart contracts to issue and trade digital art. A work of art can be recorded as a token on Ethereum, allowing it to be checked on-chain to see which address owns it and which transactions have taken place with the work.

SuperRare first became known for ERC-721 NFTs for unique artworks. With Series Contracts, artists can use their own collections and minting contracts. The platform now also supports ERC-1155 Digital Editions, where multiple copies of the same work can exist, and so-called Liquid Editions that use ERC-20 tokens.

Art can be sold via fixed prices, offers, and auctions. The settlement of these transactions takes place through SuperRare's smart contracts. For standard secondary sales on the platform, a royalty can automatically go to the original artist.

SuperRare Spaces are independent galleries within the ecosystem. Through a Space, curators can admit artists, organize exhibitions, and sell works. RARE holders can, via RareDAO, vote on processes around these Spaces and other proposals for the ecosystem, among other things.

RARE is an ERC-20 token originally issued on Ethereum. The total supply is 1,000,000,000 RARE. The first airdrop took place in August 2021 and was intended for artists and collectors who were active on SuperRare before the token was introduced.

RARE can be used for governance, as a means of payment for certain sales on the marketplace and within a staking-based rewards system. The token is also officially bridged to Base, making RARE available on this Layer 2 network as well.

SuperRare does not have its own consensus mechanism. The main marketplace transactions on Ethereum rely on Ethereum's Proof of Stake consensus for processing and finality.

Who are the founders of SuperRare?

SuperRare was founded by John Crain, Charles Crain and Jonathan “Jon” Perkins.

The team began developing the platform in late 2017 and early 2018. From this work, they also founded Pixura, a technology company that developed tools that allowed digital assets to be issued on the blockchain.

John Crain was co-founder and CEO of SuperRare and focused among other things on the strategy and development of the platform. Jonathan Perkins was co-founder and CPO and played an important role in the product and the development of the digital art market. Charles Crain was co-founder and was mainly involved in the technical infrastructure behind SuperRare and Pixura.

SuperRare went live on Ethereum in April 2018. The platform started as a marketplace for unique digital art and later grew into a broader ecosystem with curators, Spaces, RareDAO and various forms of on-chain art.
