Additional Information about Starknet (STRK)

What is Starknet (STRK)?

Starknet is a Layer 2 network built on top of Ethereum that was developed to make transactions and applications more scalable. The network processes computations outside Ethereum and uses cryptographic STARK proofs to show that the newly calculated state is correct.

Starknet is permissionless, which lets developers build applications and smart contracts on the network without permission. To do this, Starknet uses Cairo, a programming language and execution environment that was specifically built for applications whose computations can be proven cryptographically.

An important part of Starknet is the use of STARK proofs. These let Ethereum verify that large amounts of computation were done correctly without having to re-run every computation itself. This makes it possible to process more transactions while Ethereum still plays an important role in final security and settlement.

STRK is the native token of Starknet. The token is used for transaction fees, staking, and governance.

How does Starknet (STRK) work?

Starknet processes transactions and smart contracts outside Ethereum. A sequencer orders transactions and executes them, after which the changes in Starknet's state are recorded in blocks.

The computations are then cryptographically proven with STARK proofs. For this, Starknet uses Cairo. Smart contracts are first converted into intermediate formats like Sierra and CASM, after which they can be executed and proven.

An important part of this infrastructure is SHARP, StarkWare's shared proof aggregator. SHARP can combine proofs from different computations and process them recursively. In the end, a STARK proof is sent to Ethereum, where smart contracts verify the proof. This means Ethereum does not have to re-run every individual Starknet transaction.

Starknet also uses staking as part of the transition to a fully decentralized Proof of Stake network. Validators currently need to stake at least 20,000 STRK and run a full node. They attest blocks and can receive staking rewards for doing so. Users can also delegate STRK to validators without running a validator themselves.

Fully permissionless consensus is being rolled out step by step. In a next phase, validators will need to validate and vote on blocks. In the end, the goal is for validators and sequencers to share responsibility for block production and consensus.

STRK is the native token of Starknet. Since Starknet v0.14.0, transaction fees are paid only in STRK. A sequencer can convert part of the STRK it receives into ETH to pay the costs that Starknet incurs on Ethereum.

STRK is also used for staking and governance. For staking, new STRK tokens can be issued as a reward. The original token supply was 10,000,000,000 STRK, but because of these staking emissions, that is not a fixed maximum supply.

Who are the founders of Starknet?

Starknet was developed by StarkWare, a company founded in 2018 by Eli Ben-Sasson, Alessandro Chiesa, Michael Riabzev, and Uri Kolodny.

Eli Ben-Sasson is co-founder and CEO of StarkWare. He has an academic background in theoretical computer science and cryptography and was involved in developing several important zero-knowledge techniques, including FRI and the technology behind STARK proofs.

Alessandro Chiesa is co-founder and scientific advisor of StarkWare. He has a strong academic background in cryptography and zero-knowledge proofs and is a professor at UC Berkeley.

Michael Riabzev is co-founder and was closely involved in the technical development of StarkWare's STARK technology.

Uri Kolodny is co-founder and was the first CEO of StarkWare. He is now a member of the board of directors.

From StarkWare, the team developed StarkEx and Starknet, among other things. Starknet then grew into the permissionless Layer 2 network where STRK is used.
