Additional Information about Stacks (STX)

What is Stacks (STX)?

Stacks is an open-source Bitcoin layer that makes smart contracts and decentralized applications possible around Bitcoin.

Developers can build applications on Stacks for things like DeFi, tokens, and other digital assets. Transactions and smart contracts run on the Stacks network, while the protocol uses Bitcoin as an anchor for the ordering and final security of the blockchain.

An important part of the ecosystem is sBTC. This is a tokenized form of bitcoin that lets BTC be used inside applications on Stacks. This allows developers to build lending protocols, trading platforms, and other Bitcoin-based financial applications, for example.

Smart contracts on Stacks are written in Clarity, a programming language designed to make contract behavior more predictable and easier to verify ahead of time.

STX is the native token of Stacks and is used for transaction fees, smart contract execution, and Stacking.

How does Stacks (STX) work?

Stacks has its own blockchain where transactions and Clarity smart contracts are executed. At the same time, the network is closely tied to Bitcoin. Data about the Stacks chain is anchored to Bitcoin, which links the ordering and finality of Stacks transactions to the Bitcoin blockchain.

Developers write smart contracts in Clarity. These contracts are executed by Stacks-nodes and can be used for things like DeFi applications, tokens, and other on-chain services.

For block production, Stacks uses Proof of Transfer, or PoX. Miners lock up BTC to compete for the right to produce blocks. A selected miner gets a tenure and can propose multiple Stacks blocks during that period.

Since the Nakamoto upgrade, these blocks are also checked and signed by a network of signers. This allows Stacks to produce new blocks about every few seconds while the chain stays tied to Bitcoin for settlement and finality.

STX is the network’s native token. Users pay transaction fees with it and use STX for smart contract execution.

STX can also be locked through Stacking. Since the PoX-5 upgrade, this happens through signer-manager contracts. Stackers help support the network’s operation and can receive rewards that come from the BTC that Stacks miners lock up.

STX does not have a fixed maximum supply. New STX are issued as rewards for miners who produce blocks.

Who are the founders of Stacks?

Stacks traces its roots back to Blockstack, which was founded by Muneeb Ali and Ryan Shea.

Muneeb Ali has a background in computer science and earned his PhD at Princeton University. His academic research formed an important foundation for the technology that later became Stacks.

Ryan Shea was a cofounder of Blockstack and played an important role in the project’s early development. He left the original organization in 2018.

Blockstack initially developed infrastructure for decentralized applications. The project later shifted more strongly toward Bitcoin and eventually became known as Stacks.

The current Stacks blockchain went live with Stacks 2.0 in January 2021 with Proof of Transfer and Clarity smart contracts. Since then, the network has continued to develop into the current Bitcoin layer.
