What is Scroll (SCR)?

Scroll is a Layer-2 network built to make Ethereum faster and cheaper. It processes transactions outside Ethereum and then uses zero-knowledge proofs to show that these transactions were executed correctly.

Scroll is compatible with the EVM. This allows developers to use existing Ethereum applications and smart contracts on Scroll relatively easily.

The network focuses on developers and users of on-chain applications, including DeFi platforms and other Web3 services. In doing so, Scroll aims to combine Ethereum's security with lower transaction costs and higher processing speed.

How does Scroll (SCR) work?

Scroll works as a zk-rollup. Users send transactions to Scroll, where a sequencer orders and executes them. Multiple transactions are then bundled together and the required data is sent to Ethereum.

After that, the validation layer creates a cryptographic proof showing that the transactions have been processed correctly. Ethereum verifies these proofs and forms the settlement and data availability layer of Scroll.

This means Ethereum does not need to re-execute every calculation of Scroll itself. That makes it possible to process more transactions at lower cost, while the network's final state is recorded via Ethereum.

Scroll also has a bridge that allows users to move assets between Ethereum and Scroll. The network does not have a separate Proof-of-Stake mechanism in which SCR holders validate blocks themselves.

SCR is currently used mainly for governance. Holders can delegate their voting power to representatives who vote on proposals within the Scroll DAO on their behalf. The governance process is being further decentralized step by step.

The total supply is fixed at 1 billion SCR. In the initial allocation, 15% was reserved for airdrops, 35% for the ecosystem and growth, 10% for the Scroll DAO Treasury, 10% for the Scroll Foundation, 23% for core contributors and 17% for investors.

Who are the founders of Scroll?

Scroll was founded in 2021 by Ye Zhang, Sandy Peng and Haichen Shen.

Ye Zhang is a co-founder and has a technical background in zero-knowledge proofs and blockchain technology. He played an important role in the development of Scroll's zkEVM technology. Sandy Peng is a co-founder and focused from the beginning mainly on business development, strategy and growth of the project. Haichen Shen is a co-founder and technical researcher. He was involved, among other things, in the design and development of the Scroll protocol and the zkEVM circuits.

Scroll is now further developed by various teams and contributors. The Scroll Foundation also supports the ecosystem and the governance of Scroll DAO.
