Additional Information about Reserve Rights (RSR)

What is Reserve Rights (RSR)?

Reserve Rights (RSR) is Reserve’s governance and risk token. Reserve is a protocol that lets users create and manage on-chain baskets of different crypto assets.

These baskets are called Decentralized Token Folios, or DTFs. Reserve distinguishes between Yield DTFs and Index DTFs, among others. Yield DTFs consist of fully backed baskets of assets that can generate yield. Some of these may, for example, be designed as stablecoins. Index DTFs are tokenized baskets that let users gain exposure to multiple assets through a single token.

RSR plays different roles within these products. In Yield DTFs, RSR can be staked as extra protection against issues with the collateral. In Index DTFs, RSR can be locked to vote on the composition and rules of a DTF.

In addition, the protocol uses part of the fees from Index DTFs to buy back RSR on the market and burn it. As a result, the amount of available RSR may decrease over time.

How does Reserve Rights (RSR) work?

Reserve consists of smart contract protocols that can be used to create different types of DTFs. A DTF represents a basket of multiple assets and can be held, sent, minted and redeemed as a single token.

In Yield DTFs, the underlying assets are held in the protocol as backing. The returns generated by these assets can, according to predefined rules, be distributed among DTF holders, RSR stakers and other addresses.

RSR stakers can provide an additional layer of security. They lock RSR behind a specific Yield DTF and receive a share of the returns in return. If an underlying asset fails and the DTF becomes insufficiently backed, part of the staked RSR can be taken and sold to cover losses. This is also known as first-loss capital.

In Index DTFs, RSR works differently. RSR can be locked to gain voting rights over, for example, the composition of the basket, the weighting of assets, fees and the moment when the portfolio is rebalanced. The actual rules are executed via smart contracts.

Reserve also uses part of the mint and management fees from Index DTFs to buy back RSR on the market and permanently burn it. In Yield DTFs, returns can instead be used to buy RSR and distribute it to RSR stakers.

RSR is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and Reserve does not have its own consensus mechanism. Transactions with RSR on Ethereum are therefore secured by Ethereum, which uses Proof of Stake.

The total supply of RSR is fixed at 100,000,000,000 tokens. A portion of this is still held in so-called Slow and Slower Wallets, which are subject to restrictions and delays when releasing tokens.

Who are the founders of Reserve Rights?

Reserve was founded in 2017 by Nevin Freeman and Matt Elder.

Nevin Freeman is co-founder and CEO of Reserve. Before Reserve, he worked on various technology and research projects. He co-founded Reserve with Elder from the idea of giving people access to money that is less dependent on inflation and unstable national currencies.

Matt Elder is co-founder and CTO. He has a background in mathematics, computer science and software development and worked before Reserve, among other roles, as a software engineer.

The original plan focused mainly on a stable digital currency. In the years that followed, Reserve developed further into a protocol for asset-backed tokens and ultimately Decentralized Token Folios, allowing different assets to be brought together in a single on-chain token.
