Additional Information about Renzo (REZ)

What is Renzo (REZ)?

Renzo is a liquid restaking protocol and platform for managing staking and DeFi strategies. The project started with restaking via EigenLayer, but today also supports other restaking ecosystems and various yield strategies.

A key product is ezETH. Users can deposit ETH or supported liquid staking tokens, after which they receive ezETH. This token represents their restaking position and remains usable within DeFi while the underlying assets can generate staking and restaking rewards.

Renzo manages behind the scenes how capital is distributed across different operators and secured services. As a result, users do not need to decide for themselves which operators and restaking strategies they want to use.

In addition to ezETH, Renzo has developed other products, including pzETH for restaking via Symbiotic, ezSOL within the Jito ecosystem, and various automated vault strategies.

REZ is the governance token of Renzo . Token holders can use it to participate in decisions about, among other things, risk management, supported assets, operators, and the further development of the protocol.

How does Renzo (REZ) work?

Renzo uses smart contracts to manage staking and restaking positions. For ezETH, users can for example deposit ETH or supported liquid staking tokens. In return, they receive ezETH, which represents their share in the underlying restaking position.

The deposited assets are allocated via Renzo to operators and services within EigenLayer. These services are called Actively Validated Services, or AVSs. They use restaked assets as economic security and can distribute additional rewards for this.

ezETH is a reward-bearing token. Staking and restaking rewards are processed automatically, which means the value of ezETH relative to the underlying assets can increase over time. Renzo currently charges a fee of 10% on restaking rewards.

For certain AVS rewards, Renzo uses an auction system. This allows received tokens to be periodically converted into ETH, so that different types of rewards can be processed more efficiently within the restaking strategy.

Renzo does not have its own consensus mechanism. For ezETH, the protocol relies in part on Ethereum and EigenLayer. Ethereum uses Proof of Stake, while EigenLayer makes it possible to use staked assets again as economic security for other services.

REZ is the governance token of Renzo . Holders can use their voting rights themselves or delegate them and vote on topics such as risk parameters, supported collateral, operators, AVSs, and treasury spending.

REZ can also be converted into ezREZ. In doing so, REZ is restaked via EigenLayer and users receive ezREZ. This token can generate AVS rewards that are processed automatically. ezREZ holders also retain governance rights.

The old REZ staking system has now been phased out. Users who want to stake and restake REZ are migrated to ezREZ. For converting ezREZ back to REZ, a waiting period of up to 14 days currently applies.

Who are the founders of Renzo ?

Renzo was founded in 2023 by Lucas Kozinski, James Poole and Kratik Lodha.

Lucas Kozinski is a co-founder and was closely involved from the start in the strategy and development of the protocol. Before Renzo , he worked at the Tezos Foundation and Tokensoft, among others, and was involved in other Web3 projects.

James Poole is a co-founder and has a technical background in software and blockchain development. He plays an important role in the technical development of Renzo .

Kratik Lodha is a co-founder and focuses, among other things, on research, product development and the economic strategy behind the protocol.

The team started developing Renzo in 2023. The first version of the protocol went live in December 2023 and focused on making staking and restaking via EigenLayer easier. Later, Renzo expanded to other restaking ecosystems and various DeFi and vault strategies.
