Additional Information about Radworks (RAD)

What is Radworks (RAD)?

Radworks is a community-governed ecosystem working on a so-called sovereign developer stack. The goal is to let developers build, share, and fund open-source software without being fully dependent on central platforms.

Radworks supports several projects for this purpose. Radicle is a local-first peer-to-peer network for code collaboration built on top of Git. Developers can share repositories directly between their own computers and collaborate on code without a central hosting provider.

Drips focuses on funding open-source software. Through Drips, developers, projects, and organizations can distribute money across software projects and the dependencies they rely on.

Radworks connects these projects with a shared treasury and community governance. RAD holders can vote on proposals and on the allocation of resources from the treasury. Part of this decision-making takes place directly on the blockchain.

RAD is the governance token of Radworks and is used to coordinate the different participants and projects within the ecosystem.

How does Radworks (RAD) work?

Radworks combines decentralized code collaboration, funding for open-source software, and governance. The different parts of the ecosystem each have their own function.

Radicle is a local-first network built on top of Git. Users store repositories locally and can share them directly with other participants. Radicle nodes discover each other and repository updates via a gossip protocol, after which the actual code is copied between nodes via the Git protocol.

Each Radicle node has its own cryptographic identity. Updates and other actions are signed, so that other participants can verify which user the data came from. Users can choose for themselves which repositories their node stores and keeps available for other participants.

Drips forms the financing layer within the ecosystem. It allows organizations and users to finance open-source projects and automatically distribute income across projects and their software dependencies. Drips is also used for grant programs and recurring funding rounds for open-source developers.

The governance of Radworks runs on Ethereum. RAD holders can delegate their voting rights to themselves or to someone else and then vote on Radworks Governance Proposals. On-chain proposals can, for example, distribute RAD, ETH or USDC from the treasury or adjust parameters of smart contracts managed by the DAO.

RAD is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Radworks does not have its own blockchain or consensus mechanism. Transactions and on-chain governance are therefore processed and secured by Ethereum.

The total supply is 100,000,000 RAD. One delegated RAD represents one vote within governance. For certain proposals, a quorum also applies before a decision can be adopted.

Radworks is also working on additional utility for RAD. The official documentation mentions rewarding operators who provide storage and retrieval infrastructure for Radicle as a planned use case. This function has not yet been described as a fully implemented token utility.

Who are the founders of Radworks?

Radworks originates with Alexis Sellier and Eleftherios Diakomichalis, the co-founders of Radicle.

Sellier and Diakomichalis began working on the idea behind Radicle in 2017. In 2018, they founded the software company Monadic in Berlin to continue building a decentralized infrastructure for collaboration on open-source software.

Alexis Sellier, also known as cloudhead, has a background as a software developer and open-source developer. He played an important role in the technical development of Radicle.

Eleftherios Diakomichalis has a background in data science and online communities. Before Radicle, he worked at SoundCloud, among others.

In 2020, the Radicle Foundation was established and in 2021 RAD was introduced as the governance token. This created RadicleDAO, giving RAD holders control over the treasury and certain smart contracts.

In 2023, RadicleDAO was renamed Radworks. At the same time, Radicle and Drips were further spun off as separate organizations that can receive funding from the Radworks community.
