What Is QuarkChain (QKC)?

QuarkChain (QKC) is a blockchain designed to handle a high volume of transactions at once. It does this with sharding, which splits the network into smaller pieces, or shards, that process transactions in parallel. QuarkChain aims to improve blockchain scalability without giving up security or decentralization. Each shard handles its own transactions, while a central root chain connects the shards and keeps track of the network’s overall state. QuarkChain also supports the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), so developers can use Ethereum-smart contracts and related tools to build apps on the network. QKC is the native cryptocurrency of QuarkChain and is used in the ecosystem for things like transaction fees.

How Does QuarkChain (QKC) Work?

QuarkChain works by using sharding to spread transactions across multiple parts of the network. These parts, also called shards, can process transactions at the same time, so the full network does not have to handle every transaction. The blockchain has two layers. The first layer is made up of the shard chains where transactions are processed. Above that is a root chain, which secures the shards and coordinates transactions between different shards. In a cross-shard transaction, the transfer is first processed on the sender’s shard and then confirmed through the root chain and the recipient’s shard. QuarkChain uses a flexible consensus mechanism called Boson Consensus. This lets different shards use their own consensus rules and mining algorithms. The network also uses Proof of Work and Proof of Staked Work, a hybrid model that combines mining with staking QKC. QuarkChain supports the Ethereum Virtual Machine, which means developers can use Ethereum smart contracts and familiar development tools. QKC is the network’s native token and is used, among other things, to pay transaction fees and participate in parts of the consensus and mining system.

Who Founded QuarkChain?

QuarkChain was founded by Qi Zhou. He has a PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology and specializes in large-scale distributed systems. Before founding QuarkChain, Zhou worked at Google and Facebook, among other places. The experience he gained there with complex computer systems fit with his goal of building a scalable blockchain that can handle large numbers of transactions.
