Additional Information about Pendle (PENDLE)

What is Pendle (PENDLE)?

Pendle is a DeFi protocol that lets users separately trade the future yield of yield-bearing crypto.

Pendle splits a yield-bearing asset into two parts: the principal, meaning the original value of the position, and the future yield. For this, the protocol uses Principal Tokens (PT) and Yield Tokens (YT). A PT gives rights to the underlying value at maturity, while a YT gives rights to the returns generated up to that end date.

This allows users to use different strategies. For example, someone who buys PT and holds it until the end date can lock in an implied fixed return. Someone who buys YT, on the other hand, gets additional exposure to changes in the future yield of the underlying asset.

Pendle uses Standardized Yield, or SY, to process different yield-bearing tokens according to one standard. Trading these positions takes place in part through a specialized AMM that takes the position's term and the approaching end date into account.

Pendle has also developed Boros. This is a separate platform that allows users to trade interest streams, such as funding rates from perpetual futures.

How does Pendle (PENDLE) work?

Pendle first converts a yield-bearing asset into a Standardized Yield token, or SY. The position can then be split into a Principal Token (PT) and a Yield Token (YT).

PT represents the principal of the position. At maturity, PT can be redeemed 1:1 for the accounting asset of the relevant market. Because PT is usually traded at a discount before that date, a user can lock in an implied fixed return by buying PT and holding it until maturity.

YT represents the returns of the underlying yield-bearing position until maturity. Whoever holds YT receives the yield and any supported rewards generated by the underlying asset during that period. After maturity, that right expires.

Trading takes place through specialized Pendle Markets. These use smart contracts and an AMM that takes time into account. As the maturity date gets closer, the price of PT moves toward its redemption value. The AMM's pricing model takes this effect into account.

Pendle does not run on its own blockchain. The smart contracts are available on various EVM networks, including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, BNB Chain, Optimism and other chains. The processing and security of a transaction depend on the blockchain on which the relevant Pendle market runs. On Ethereum, for example, this happens via Proof of Stake.

PENDLE is the protocol's governance and incentive token. Users can stake PENDLE 1:1 and receive sPENDLE in return. sPENDLE gives voting rights and can entitle holders to protocol rewards.

Pendle uses 80% of the fees from Pendle V2 yield and swap fees to buy back PENDLE. Up to 100% of the repurchased tokens can then be distributed as sPENDLE to active sPENDLE holders. To count as active, holders must participate in governance when a proposal is open.

Anyone who wants to convert sPENDLE back to PENDLE without fees currently has to wait 14 days. Immediate unstaking is also possible, but currently costs a 5% fee.

The old vePENDLE model is being phased out. Existing vePENDLE positions will continue to expire, after which sPENDLE will fully take over the governance and reward model.

Who are the founders of Pendle?

Pendle was founded in 2020 by TN Lee and Vu Nguyen.

TN Lee is co-founder and CEO of Pendle. Before Pendle, he worked at Kyber Network, among other places, where he was involved in the business development of the blockchain project.

Vu Nguyen is co-founder and CTO. He has a technical background in blockchain and smart contract development and is closely involved in the architecture behind Pendle.

The team began developing a protocol in 2020 that would allow the principal and future yield of yield-bearing crypto to be traded separately.

PENDLE was launched in April 2021. In that same year, the first version of the protocol went live on Ethereum. Later, Pendle V2 followed, with the current SY, PT and YT architecture and a specialized AMM for yield trading.
