What Is OriginTrail (TRAC)?

OriginTrail (TRAC) is a network for sharing and verifying reliable data. It works like a decentralized knowledge layer, so information is not locked in one place and can be accessed and checked by multiple parties.

Organizations and developers can publish Knowledge Assets on it. These are pieces of information that others can use and verify. AI systems can also use that data, without every party having to fully trust each other.

The goal of OriginTrail is to help prevent incorrect or poorly verified data. By making information visible and verifiable to multiple parties, it does not stay locked inside one company. The network is mainly focused on business use cases where reliable shared information matters, such as product data, shipment information, and other structured knowledge.

How Does OriginTrail (TRAC) Work?

OriginTrail works through a Decentralized Knowledge Graph, or DKG for short. In this network, data is published as Knowledge Assets and linked together. You can think of these assets as small, structured pieces of information, for example about a product or a shipment.

Each asset stores cryptographic proofs. These are digital proofs that let others check whether the data is correct. So the system is not just meant to store information, but also to make that information verifiable.

OriginTrail is multichain. That means it does not run on just one blockchain, but can work with multiple blockchains. Because of that, data and services can be used more flexibly and costs can be lower. For the connection with blockchains, OriginTrail uses smart contracts and staking on different networks. It follows the rules of those underlying chains, such as the parachain logic for the OriginTrail Parachain and the consensus of EVM networks.

TRAC is the network token. It is used for publishing data, for staking, and for rewards within the network. Node operators store and share data. Tokens can be staked to nodes or delegated to them, so they have more stake. Participants receive rewards for their contribution.

Who Are the Founders of OriginTrail ?

OriginTrail was founded in 2013 by Žiga Drev, Tomaž Levak, and Branimir Rakić. At first, the project focused on improving transparency, reliability, and data sharing within supply chains. In 2017, the first whitepaper for the OriginTrail protocol was released. A year later, the mainnet of the OriginTrail Decentralized Knowledge Graph was launched. Trace Labs is the main developer of the OriginTrail technology. The team works on the open-source software, infrastructure, and applications around the network, helping carry out the founders' vision further.
