Additional Information about Orca (ORCA)

What is Orca (ORCA)?

Orca is a decentralized crypto exchange and liquidity platform on Solana. Users can swap tokens there and provide crypto as liquidity.

The core of Orca consists of Whirlpools. These are liquidity pools with concentrated liquidity, where liquidity providers can decide within which price range their capital is active. As a result, capital can be used more efficiently than when liquidity is spread across all possible prices.

Orca also offers vaults that let users follow liquidity strategies without actively managing all positions themselves. Developers and token issuers can also create tokens and liquidity pools via Orca.

The platform is also expanding into other forms of on-chain capital, including tokenized real-world assets and permissioned pools for assets where restrictions apply to who is allowed to trade them.

ORCA is the governance and utility token of the protocol. The token can be staked and is used to participate in the governance of Orca.

How does Orca (ORCA) work?

Orca uses smart contracts on Solana to execute swaps and liquidity positions. The main smart contract infrastructure is called Whirlpools.

A Whirlpool divides prices across so-called ticks. Liquidity providers choose within which price range they want to make their tokens available. As long as the market price stays within that range, their liquidity can be used for swaps and they can receive part of the trading fees.

Orca supports both pools with fixed trading fees and Adaptive Fee Pools. In Adaptive Fee Pools, the fee can automatically change based on recent price movements and market conditions. For larger price movements, for example, the fee can temporarily increase.

Liquidity positions can also be managed via vaults. Such a vault can execute a strategy for placing and adjusting liquidity, so that a user does not have to manage every position themselves.

Orca does not have its own blockchain or consensus mechanism. The protocol runs on Solana and depends on that network for processing and confirming transactions. Solana uses, among other things, Proof of History in combination with a Proof-of-Stake-based consensus mechanism.

ORCA is an SPL token on Solana. Users can stake ORCA and receive xORCA in return. xORCA represents a share in the staking pool and is used within the protocol's governance.

A portion of the protocol revenue is used to buy back ORCA. This ORCA is added to the xORCA system, which means the amount of ORCA behind each xORCA can increase over time. A cooldown period applies when exchanging xORCA back to ORCA.

Through governance, ORCA and xORCA holders can vote on proposals for the protocol and the use of the treasury.

Who are the founders of Orca?

Orca was founded in 2021 by Grace “Ori” Kwan and Yutaro Mori.

Grace Kwan is a co-founder of Orca and has a background in computer science and product design. She studied at Stanford and worked for Orca, among others at Coursera and IDEO Tokyo.

Yutaro Mori is a co-founder and software developer. Before Orca, he worked on various blockchain projects and was involved, among other things, in software around Ethereum and DeFi.

Kwan and Mori originally built Orca as a user-friendly decentralized exchange on Solana. The protocol then grew further around Whirlpools, governance, staking and other forms of on-chain liquidity management.
