What Is Ontology Gas (ONG)?

Ontology Gas (ONG) is the gas token for the Ontology ecosystem. You use it to pay for transactions and smart contracts on the network. In this case, gas just means the fee you pay to do something on the blockchain.

The main job of ONG is to cover transaction fees and service fees within the Ontology network. That network focuses on digital identity and data sharing.

Whenever someone sends a transaction or uses an identity- or data-related service, ONG is used to pay the cost. That’s how ONG helps keep the network running.

How Does Ontology Gas (ONG) Work?

Ontology Gas (ONG) works on a Layer-1 blockchain. In other words, it’s a standalone blockchain network where transactions are processed directly. On this mainnet, you pay for transactions and services with ONG.

The network is built around interoperability between different systems, along with business apps and identity services. ONG is the token you use to settle payments on the network.

Ontology uses a dual-token setup. That means there are two tokens, and each one has its own role. ONT is used for governance and staking, while ONG is used to pay for network activity. People who stake ONT can earn ONG as a reward.

Transactions and block production on Ontology are handled with the VBFT-consensus mechanism. A consensus mechanism is how the network agrees on which transactions are valid. VBFT combines proof-of-stake with a verifiable random function and Byzantine fault tolerance. This helps the network validate and process transactions.

Ontology supports smart contracts and services for identity and data, and ONG is also used to pay for those. The maximum supply of ONG is set at 800,000,000 ONG.

Who Are the Founders of Ontology Gas?

Ontology was founded by Li Jun, who is usually named as the project’s founder. He played the main role in setting up Ontology, the network that Ontology Gas (ONG) belongs to.
