What is Numeraire (NMR)?

Numeraire (NMR) is the token of Numerai, a hedge fund and data science platform from San Francisco. Numerai uses machine learning and crowdsourcing to collect predictions for financial markets.

Numerai provides datasets that allow data scientists and AI systems to build models. The data is adjusted so participants cannot see exactly which companies and financial characteristics lie behind it. In this way, Numerai tries to limit human bias and the use of unauthorized information.

Participants regularly send predictions from their models to Numerai. The predictions from models that have NMR staked are combined in a so-called Stake-Weighted Meta Model. Numerai uses the information from this model as part of its hedge fund trading strategy.

NMR is used to financially link participants to the performance of their predictions. They can stake NMR on their own model. Good predictions can earn extra NMR, while poor performance can cause part of the staked NMR to be burned.

How does Numeraire (NMR) work?

Numerai organizes an ongoing data science tournament. The platform publishes datasets with hidden characteristics of financial markets. Participants train machine learning models on them and submit predictions about future market developments.

Numerai evaluates these predictions after the actual market data becomes available. An important metric is how well a model predicts, but also how much unique information it adds compared with other models. The predictions of models on which NMR has been staked are combined based on their stake in the Stake-Weighted Meta Model that Numerai uses in its trading strategy.

Participants can stake NMR on their own predictions. Staking means that an amount of NMR is locked during the evaluation period. If the prediction performs well, the participant can receive extra NMR. With a negative score, part of the stake can be permanently burned.

Numerai uses Atomic Blockchain Staking for this. Each round gets a separate stake. After the evaluation period ends, Numerai calculates how much NMR must be paid out or burned. This outcome is then handled on-chain via smart contracts.

NMR is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Numerai does not have its own blockchain. The on-chain transactions and staking contracts therefore rely on Ethereum for processing and security.

NMR is mainly a utility token for staking and rewards within Numerai. The token does not give ownership rights in Numerai or the hedge fund and is not a share that allows users to participate in the fund's income.

NMR has a maximum supply of 11,000,000 tokens. Tokens that are burned as a result of poor predictions disappear permanently from the supply.

Who are the founders of Numeraire?

Numerai was founded in 2015 by Richard Craib. He is the founder and CEO of the company behind the platform.

Craib is from South Africa and studied mathematics at Cornell University, among other subjects. Before Numerai, he worked on machine learning models for financial markets. From that experience came the idea to make financial data available to a large group of external data scientists and use their models collectively.

Numerai started in 2015 as a data science platform and hedge fund. In 2017, the company introduced Numeraire, or NMR, to let participants financially stake on the quality of their own models.

Since then, the system has been further developed around staking, where good predictions can earn NMR and poor performance can cause part of the staked tokens to be burned.
