What is Morpho (MORPHO)?

Morpho (MORPHO) is the governance token of Morpho, a decentralized lending protocol for EVM networks. With Morpho, users can lend crypto, deposit collateral, and borrow other assets against that collateral.

Morpho works with permissionless lending markets. This means that new markets can be created without permission from a central party. The risks of these markets are separated from each other, so problems in one market do not automatically affect other markets.

In addition, Morpho offers Vaults. These allow users to deposit capital into a vault that can automatically distribute it across different Morpho markets according to a specific strategy.

Morpho focuses on individual borrowers and lenders, as well as developers, companies, and financial institutions that want to build lending products on top of the protocol.

MORPHO gives holders voting rights over certain parts of the protocol. The token can also be used for incentives to encourage the use and liquidity of Morpho.

How does Morpho (MORPHO) work?

Morpho consists of different lending protocols. Morpho Blue focuses on loans with variable interest rates, while Morpho Midnight enables loans with a fixed interest rate and fixed term.

Morpho Blue uses isolated lending markets. Each market combines one asset that can be borrowed with one asset that serves as collateral. In addition, parameters are set when the market is created, such as the oracle, the maximum loan-to-value, and the interest model. Anyone can create a new market, and the main parameters cannot be changed afterward.

As a result, Morpho Blue does not use a peer-to-peer matching layer on top of Aave or Compound. That system belonged to an earlier version of Morpho, now called Morpho Optimizers.

Morpho Vaults can be built on top of these markets. Users deposit assets into a vault, after which a curator determines how this liquidity is distributed across different Morpho markets according to predefined rules.

Morpho Midnight works differently. Here, users borrow and lend against a fixed interest rate and with a predetermined end date. Users buy or sell credit and debt units at prices that determine the fixed interest rate. Orders can be offered off-chain, after which final execution takes place via smart contracts.

Morpho does not have its own blockchain or consensus mechanism. The smart contracts run on existing EVM networks and rely on the relevant blockchain for transaction processing and finality. On Ethereum, for example, this happens via Proof of Stake.

MORPHO is the governance token of the protocol. The number of MORPHO tokens someone holds or has delegated to them determines the weight of their vote. Governance can decide, among other things, on the protocol treasury, certain permitted market parameters, and protocol fees. The core contracts of Morpho Blue itself are immutable.

The maximum supply is 1,000,000,000 MORPHO. The token became freely transferable on 21 November 2024.

Who are the founders of Morpho ?

Morpho was founded in 2021 by Paul Frambot, Merlin Egalité, Julien Thomas and Mathis Gontier Delaunay.

Paul Frambot is co-founder and CEO of Morpho. He started the project together with the other founders during his studies and focuses, among other things, on the strategy and further development of the Morpho network.

Merlin Egalité is co-founder and has a technical background in blockchain development and smart contracts. He is closely involved in the development and growth of the protocol.

Julien Thomas is co-founder and was involved in the technical development of Morpho from the early stages.

Mathis Gontier Delaunay is also co-founder and focuses mainly on research and the design of the protocols behind Morpho.

The team started developing Morpho in 2021. The first version optimized existing lending protocols such as Aave and Compound with peer-to-peer matching. In 2023, Morpho Blue was announced as an independent lending protocol with permissionless and isolated markets.
