Additional Information about Mantle (MNT)

What is Mantle ?

Mantle is a blockchain project focused on making transactions within the Ethereum ecosystem faster, cheaper, and more scalable. Mantle is a Layer 2 network on top of Ethereum. This means that not all transactions are executed directly on the Ethereum mainnet, but are first processed through a separate scalability layer. After that, data, summaries, or proofs are relayed back to Ethereum. This allows users to benefit from lower transaction fees and faster processing, while Mantle simultaneously leverages the security and broad infrastructure of Ethereum.

The native token of the Mantle ecosystem is MNT. This token is used for transaction fees, governance, and various applications within the network. Mantle mainly focuses on DeFi, liquidity, liquid staking, and other forms of on-chain finance. With this, the project aims to provide infrastructure for financial applications built on the blockchain.

How does Mantle work?

Mantle operates as a Layer 2 network on top of Ethereum. This means Mantle does not have all transactions executed directly on Ethereum, but processes them first on a separate layer. As a result, transactions can be executed faster and cheaper than if every transaction took place directly on Ethereum.

Ethereum remains important in this setup. Mantle uses Ethereum as the underlying security layer. In practice, Mantle processes the transactions itself, then bundles these transactions and sends data, summaries, or proofs to Ethereum. Ethereum is then used to record the network’s final state. This keeps Mantle connected to Ethereum’s security and infrastructure.

Mantle uses a modular blockchain architecture. This means not all tasks are performed by a single blockchain layer. Instead, Mantle distributes different functions across multiple components. Transaction execution happens on Mantle itself. Final verification and settlement happen via Ethereum. To make transaction data available, Mantle uses a separate data layer. This allows the network to operate more cheaply than if all data were posted directly to Ethereum.

How Mantle functions

Within Mantle itself, transactions are ordered by a so-called sequencer. This is a part of the network that collects transactions, puts them in the correct order, and processes them on Layer 2. These transactions are then bundled and forwarded to Ethereum. This way, Ethereum does not need to process every individual transaction directly, while the network can still use Ethereum as a reliable base layer.

Mantle originally used an optimistic rollup model, where transactions were initially considered valid unless someone proved an error within a certain period. Mantle is now evolving further toward a ZK-validity model. In this model, cryptographic proofs, also called zero-knowledge proofs, are used to demonstrate that transactions were executed correctly. As a result, Ethereum does not need to fully re-check all transactions. This development should help Mantle provide faster finality for transactions and further improve network security.

Compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine

Because Mantle is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, developers can relatively easily bring existing Ethereum applications to Mantle . Many smart contracts, Wallets, and DeFi applications built for Ethereum can therefore also be used on Mantle with limited adjustments. For users, this means they can use similar applications as on Ethereum, but often with lower transaction fees and faster processing.

Who founded Mantle ?

Mantle originated from BitDAO, a decentralized autonomous organization launched in 2021. BitDAO was backed by Bybit and several major investors, including Peter Thiel, Founders Fund, Pantera Capital, and Dragonfly Capital.

In 2023, the BitDAO community decided to merge BitDAO and Mantle under one brand and one token. This happened through a governance proposal known as BIP-21. Through this proposal, BitDAO was transformed into Mantle , and the BIT token was converted to MNT.

The Mantle mainnet officially went live on July 17, 2023 with the launch of Mantle Network Mainnet Alpha. Therefore, 2023 is usually seen as the key start year of Mantle as an independent ecosystem and Layer 2 network.

What is MNT used for?

MNT is the native token of the Mantle ecosystem. The token originally came from BitDAO’s BIT token and exists on Ethereum as an ERC-20 token. Within Mantle itself, MNT is used as the network’s native gas token. This means users need MNT to pay transaction fees when they make transactions or use applications on Mantle .

Mantle therefore does not have a fully separate token standard like some other blockchains. Because Mantle is EVM-compatible, the network aligns with Ethereum’s infrastructure and ERC-20 tokens can be moved via bridges between Ethereum and Mantle . For MNT, this means the token exists on Ethereum as an ERC-20 token, while on Mantle it serves as the network and utility token.

You can do several things with MNT tokens within the Mantle ecosystem:

  • Pay transaction fees: MNT is used to pay transaction fees on the Mantle network.
  • Trading: The token can be bought, sold, and traded on supported trading platforms, such as Finst.
  • Participate in governance: MNT holders can vote through Mantle DAO on proposals and decisions within the Mantle ecosystem, such as protocol changes, treasury usage, and the further development of the network.
  • Use within DeFi: MNT can be used within decentralized applications on Mantle , for example for liquidity, lending, borrowing, or other financial applications.
  • Boost the ecosystem: MNT is used for rewards and incentives meant to attract and support users, developers, and projects within the Mantle network.

Advantages of Mantle

Mantle offers several advantages compared to other blockchain networks:

  • Lower transaction fees: As a Layer 2 network, Mantle processes transactions more cheaply than Ethereum itself, which can make it more attractive for users and developers.
  • Faster transactions: Because transactions are processed outside the Ethereum mainnet and then relayed back, Mantle can operate faster and more efficiently than Ethereum Layer 1.
  • Ethereum compatibility: Mantle is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, allowing developers to relatively easily bring existing Ethereum applications to Mantle .
  • Modular architecture: Mantle separates different blockchain functions, such as execution and data availability, to improve scalability and efficiency.
  • Governance via MNT: Holders of MNT can help decide on proposals within the Mantle ecosystem, such as protocol changes, treasury usage, and ecosystem development.
  • Strong focus on on-chain finance: Mantle focuses not only on scalability, but also on DeFi, liquidity, staking, and other financial applications within the blockchain sector.

Disadvantages of Mantle

Despite the advantages, there are also some drawbacks:

  • Strong competition: Mantle competes with other Ethereum Layer 2 networks such as Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, and zkSync, which are also working on scalability and lower costs.
  • Dependence on Ethereum: Because Mantle is built as a Layer 2 solution for Ethereum, it remains partly dependent on Ethereum’s performance, security, and development.
  • Complexity: The modular architecture and Layer 2 technology can be harder for beginner users to understand than simpler blockchain projects.
  • Governance risk: Decisions within the ecosystem are influenced by governance. This can offer benefits, but can also create risks if proposals are not in the best interest of all users.
  • Market volatility: The price of MNT can fluctuate significantly due to general market conditions, speculation, and changes in demand for the token.
