Additional Information about LimeWire (LMWR)

What is LimeWire (LMWR)?

LimeWire is a platform for sharing and creating digital content. It uses the name of the well-known file-sharing program from the 2000s, but was relaunched in 2022 by a new team.

The current LimeWire focuses mainly on file sharing and AI. Users can upload, share, and edit files and use AI tools to create images, music, and other digital content, among other things.

In addition, LimeWire is developing a decentralized storage network called LimeWire Network. This network makes storage capacity from different providers available for storing and retrieving files.

LimeWire started after the relaunch as a marketplace for digital collectibles and NFTs. NFTs still play a role within the ecosystem, for example through the LimeWire Originals collection, but they are no longer the platform's main focus.

LMWR is the utility token of the LimeWire ecosystem and is used for payments, rewards, and staking, among other things. Some services can also be paid for with regular payment methods or other crypto.

How does LimeWire (LMWR) work?

LimeWire consists of a central user platform and a decentralized storage layer. Through the LimeWire platform, users can upload, share, and edit files and use various AI tools to create digital content.

For storage, the company is developing LimeWire Network. This is a decentralized network in which storage providers make storage capacity available. The network is S3-compatible, allowing developers to connect existing cloud storage software to LimeWire Network relatively easily.

Nodes store files and other data, while validators help verify that storage providers are carrying out their tasks correctly. The system uses staking and slashing to financially incentivize participants to follow the rules. Those who support the network correctly can earn rewards, while participants may lose part of their stake for certain violations.

LMWR is used within LimeWire Network for payments and rewards. Users of the storage service pay with LMWR, and storage providers and node operators can receive LMWR for the infrastructure they provide.

LMWR was originally issued as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. The token was later also made available via bridges on BNB Smart Chain and Base. As a result, the token does not have its own blockchain or consensus mechanism, but uses the security of the networks on which it is traded and used.

The original smart contract on Ethereum created 1,000,000,000 LMWR. LimeWire then carried out several burn programs, reducing the official total supply to 633,045,269 LMWR in July 2024.

In addition to use within LimeWire Network, LMWR can be staked via staking pools and used for payments and user rewards within the broader LimeWire platform.

Who are the founders of LimeWire?

The current LimeWire was relaunched in 2022 by the Austrian brothers Paul and Julian Zehetmayr. They are the founders of the new company behind the LimeWire platform and are officially referred to as Founder & Co-CEO.

Paul and Julian Zehetmayr were already active as technology entrepreneurs before LimeWire. Together, they founded MobFox, apilayer, eversign and ZeroSSL, among others, companies that were later sold.

The brothers acquired the LimeWire brand and announced the platform's return in March 2022. The new LimeWire had no organizational connection with the original company behind the file-sharing program of the same name from the 2000s.

Marcus Feistl is COO of LimeWire. He previously worked at Bitpanda and Boston Consulting Group, among others, but is not referred to as a co-founder of LimeWire.
