Additional Information about Kaspa (KAS)

What is Kaspa (KAS)?

Kaspa (KAS) is a cryptocurrency and blockchain launched in 2021 as a fast and scalable platform. Kaspa uses an innovative consensus mechanism called GHOSTDAG. Unlike traditional blockchains, which store blocks linearly in a single chain, Kaspa uses a so-called blockDAG (Directed Acyclic Graph) structure. This structure determines how blocks are stored and ordered within the network: multiple blocks can exist simultaneously and are connected to each other, instead of only one block being accepted at a time while the rest are discarded.

Transaction processing and validation take place via the Proof of Work (PoW) mechanism, where miners solve cryptographic puzzles to produce new blocks and secure the network. The blockDAG then determines how these blocks are stored and connected. This combination allows Kaspa to handle simultaneous block production more efficiently.

As a result, multiple blocks can be processed at the same time, leading to transaction speeds of up to thousands of transactions per second, with measured peaks of over 3,000 TPS—faster than Bitcoin and comparable to the Ethereum mainnet. Combined with a block time of around 1 second, transactions are also processed and confirmed much faster than on networks like Bitcoin (around 10 minutes) and Ethereum (around 12 seconds), while the network continues to focus on further scalability.

Thanks to its efficiency and speed, Kaspa is attractive for both everyday payments and more advanced applications within the crypto ecosystem.

How does Kaspa (KAS) work?

Kaspa combines a blockDAG architecture with the Proof of Work (PoW) mechanism to process transactions securely, in a decentralized way, and efficiently. The blockDAG structure determines how blocks are stored and connected, while PoW is responsible for validating transactions and securing the network.

Unlike traditional blockchains, where blocks are placed in a single chain, blocks in Kaspa are added to a network of interconnected blocks. This allows miners to create multiple blocks simultaneously without them excluding each other.

The GHOSTDAG protocol plays a crucial role here. This consensus mechanism determines how all these simultaneously produced blocks are ordered and which blocks are considered leading. Instead of discarding competing blocks, GHOSTDAG analyzes them and incorporates them into the structure, giving more weight to the most reliable blocks within the network.

Thanks to this combination of blockDAG and GHOSTDAG, Kaspa can process multiple blocks in parallel without compromising security. Combined with Proof of Work, this results in a network that is both secure and scalable, and more efficient in processing transactions than traditional PoW blockchains like Bitcoin.

The difference between blockDAG and GHOSTDAG is that blockDAG determines how blocks are stored and connected within the network, while GHOSTDAG determines how these blocks are ordered and which ones are considered leading and trustworthy. Together, they enable Kaspa to process multiple blocks simultaneously without sacrificing security or consensus.

Who are the founders of Kaspa (KAS)?

Kaspa was launched in 2021 as an open-source project by Yonatan Sompolinsky, together with a team of developers and researchers. Yonatan Sompolinsky is a renowned computer scientist and cryptography researcher. He is best known for his work on scalable blockchain solutions and was a co-author of the original Ghost protocol, which later formed the basis for improvements in, among others, Ethereum.

What is the KAS token?

The KAS token is the native cryptocurrency of the Kaspa network and plays an important role within the ecosystem. It is used as a reward for miners who produce new blocks and secure the network via the Proof of Work (PoW) mechanism. This means that new tokens are issued through mining, similar to Bitcoin. The more miners are active within the network, the more decentralized the network can be considered.

In addition, KAS is used to process transactions within the network. Users pay transaction fees in KAS to have their transactions executed and included in blocks.

What can you do with KAS tokens?

You can use KAS tokens for various purposes both within and outside the Kaspa network:

  • Execute transactions: KAS can be used to send and receive value within the network, with relatively fast and low-cost transactions thanks to the short block time.
  • Pay transaction fees: Users pay fees in KAS to have transactions processed and included in blocks.
  • Mining (earning rewards): Miners receive KAS as a reward for providing computational power and securing the network via Proof of Work.
  • Trading on platforms: KAS can be bought, sold, and traded on various crypto exchanges, such as Finst.
