Additional Information about Internet Computer (ICP)

What is Internet Computer (ICP)?

Internet Computer is a Layer 1 blockchain built to let complete applications and online services run directly on a decentralized network. The network is therefore also called a “world computer.”

Applications on Internet Computer run in so-called canisters. These are programs that can store and process both code and data on the blockchain. This allows developers to build, for example, a website, backend, database, and other parts of an application within the same network.

Internet Computer consists of multiple subnets. Each subnet is a group of independent nodes that run the same canisters and jointly verify which transactions and changes are valid. By letting multiple subnets work in parallel, the network can expand its capacity.

Internet Computer also supports Chain Fusion. This allows canisters to communicate directly with other blockchains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana. This enables developers to build applications that use assets and data from different blockchain networks without being fully dependent on traditional bridges.

ICP is the native token of the network and is used, among other things, for governance and for paying for computation and storage.

How does Internet Computer (ICP) work?

Internet Computer works with canisters. These are smart contracts that can do much more than just execute simple transactions. A canister contains code and persistent data and can, for example, display a website, run backend logic and communicate with other canisters.

The network consists of multiple subnets. A subnet consists of a group of nodes that run the same canisters and jointly process the same transactions. Each subnet has its own blockchain and consensus process. Subnets work in parallel, allowing Internet Computer to scale by adding new subnets.

When a user makes a change, the nodes within the relevant subnet must agree on the order and outcome. ICP uses its own BFT-based consensus protocol for this. Blocks are proposed, notarized and finalized by the nodes of the subnet. A confirmed change typically reaches finality within about one to two seconds.

Chain-key cryptography plays an important role here. The nodes within a subnet share cryptographic keys together, without one node possessing the full private key. This allows a subnet to sign data jointly and also enables canisters to carry out transactions on other blockchains.

Via Chain Fusion, canisters can for example directly sign Bitcoin, Ethereum or Solana transactions. This makes cross-chain applications possible without a single central party managing the private keys.

ICP is used for governance via the Network Nervous System, or NNS. Holders can lock ICP in so-called neurons and vote on proposals for the network. In return, they can receive voting rewards.

Developers also use ICP to obtain cycles. Cycles are the unit of computation used by canisters to pay for computation, storage and network traffic. When ICP is converted into cycles, the ICP used is burned. New ICP can be issued through minting for, among other things, governance rewards and payments to node providers. As a result, ICP does not have a fixed maximum supply.

Who are the founders of Internet Computer?

Internet Computer was conceived by Dominic Williams, the founder and Chief Scientist of the DFINITY Foundation.

Williams began researching a scalable blockchain network around 2014 that could run not only transactions, but complete software and online services. That research later led to DFINITY, the organization that developed Internet Computer.

Before DFINITY, Williams was active as a technology entrepreneur. He worked on multiplayer games and other software projects, among other things. His experience with large-scale online systems later played a role in the design of Internet Computer.

The DFINITY Foundation was founded in Switzerland in 2016 and then spent several years building the technology behind Internet Computer. The Internet Computer mainnet went live on 10 May 2021.
