Additional Information about Enzyme (MLN)

What is Enzyme (MLN)?

Enzyme is infrastructure for tokenized finance. With the platform, companies, fund managers, and other parties can set up, manage, and tokenize financial strategies and products on the blockchain.

An important part is Enzyme Vaults. A vault can, for example, represent an investment strategy or fund. Investors can deposit assets and receive tokens in return that represent their share in the vault. Rules regarding, among other things, permitted assets, fees, and deposits can be set in advance.

Enzyme now consists of several products. Enzyme Blue focuses on managing on-chain strategies and funds. Enzyme Onyx is a more flexible infrastructure that also allows on-chain and off-chain assets to be represented in tokenized financial products. Enzyme Myso focuses on on-chain options.

The platform is mainly intended for fund managers, financial institutions, product issuers, and other organizations that want to use blockchain technology for asset management and tokenization.

MLN is the original token of the Enzyme ecosystem. Its main current function is paying protocol fees within Enzyme Blue.

How does Enzyme (MLN) work?

Enzyme uses smart contracts to run tokenized vaults and financial strategies on blockchains. A vault can manage assets and issue tokens that represent a user's share in that vault.

In Enzyme Blue, much of the management happens directly on-chain. A vault manager can set rules for things like permitted assets, deposits, withdrawals, and different types of fees. The protocol can also connect with other DeFi protocols to trade assets or use them in other financial strategies, for example.

Enzyme Onyx works more flexibly. Here, ERC-20 shares can be issued that represent a share in a portfolio or financial product. The value behind these shares can consist of both on-chain and off-chain assets. Onyx also supports customizable fees, deposit and withdrawal processes, and periodic valuation, among other things.

Enzyme does not have its own consensus mechanism. The smart contracts run on existing blockchains and depend on the relevant network for transaction processing and finality. Enzyme Blue currently supports, among others, Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, and Polygon. Onyx is designed for various EVM-compatible networks.

MLN mainly has a utility function within Enzyme Blue. The protocol charges a standard protocol fee of 0.50% on the Assets Under Technology. When the fee is paid via MLN, it can effectively be reduced to 0.25%. The MLN that the protocol receives is burned.

At the same time, up to 300,600 new MLN can be minted each year for the development and growth of the protocol. Unused tokens from this annual allocation are generally burned.

The governance of Enzyme is currently carried out via specialized committees. More extensive governance functions for MLN holders are still described in the official documentation as a possible future expansion.

Who are the founders of Enzyme?

Enzyme originated with Mona El Isa and Reto Trinkler, who founded the Swiss company Melonport in 2016. From Melonport, they developed the Melon Protocol, the predecessor of Enzyme.

Mona El Isa has a background in traditional financial markets and worked among others at Goldman Sachs. She played an important role in the idea of making asset management more transparent and accessible through blockchain technology.

Reto Trinkler was co-founder of Melonport and focused mainly on the technical development of the original protocol. He has a background in software development and blockchain technology and later left Melonport to focus on other projects.

Melon Protocol and the MLN token were publicly introduced in 2017. The first version of the protocol went live on Ethereum in 2019. In 2020, Melon Protocol was renamed Enzyme.

The current Enzyme organization names Mona El Isa as founder. Reto Trinkler is mainly associated with the original founding of Melonport and the early development of the protocol.
