Additional Information about Core (CORE)

What is Core (CORE)?

Core is a Layer 1 blockchain designed to make Bitcoin more useful for DeFi and other on-chain applications. The network is EVM-compatible. This means developers can use existing Ethereum tools and smart contracts on Core relatively easily.

An important part of Core is Self-Custodial Bitcoin Staking. This lets users lock up their BTC on the Bitcoin network while still keeping control of their Bitcoin. The staked BTC helps secure Core and select validators, and can generate CORE rewards.

Core calls itself the “Bitcoin Everything Chain”. The network focuses on Bitcoin holders, miners and developers who want to build applications around Bitcoin. With Dual Staking, users can stake both BTC and CORE. A higher amount of staked CORE relative to BTC can result in higher Bitcoin staking rewards.

How does Core (CORE) work?

Core uses the Satoshi Plus consensus model. This system combines three forms of participation: Delegated Proof of Work, Self-Custodial Bitcoin Staking and Delegated Proof of Stake. Together, these components determine which validators secure the Core network.

Bitcoin miners can delegate part of their hashpower to Core validators. Bitcoin holders can timelock BTC on the Bitcoin network with CheckLockTimeVerify, also known as CLTV, and link this stake to a Core validator. CORE holders can also delegate their tokens to validators. Based on these three contributions, each validator receives a combined score. The validators with the highest score are selected to process transactions and produce new blocks.

With Self-Custodial Bitcoin Staking, the BTC remains in the user's wallet and is not wrapped or moved to Core. Relayers send information from Bitcoin to Core, so the network can verify which BTC has been locked and to which validator it is linked. Verifiers also monitor the behavior of validators and other participants.

With Dual Staking, users can stake BTC and CORE at the same time. The amount of CORE someone stakes alongside their BTC partly determines which reward category they fall into. Higher CORE-to-BTC ratios can result in higher Bitcoin staking rewards.

CORE is the network's native token. The token is used for transaction fees, staking and governance. Validators must also lock CORE as bond to participate in the network. The maximum supply is 2,100,000,000 CORE.

Who are the founders of Core?

It has not been publicly confirmed exactly who founded Core. Core was set up from the start as a community-driven blockchain project and no official list of individual founders has been published.

However, there are several well-known early contributors. Kieran Dennis, for example, is described as one of the first contributors to Core, while Rich Rines has long played a leading role within the Core Foundation and the broader ecosystem. However, they cannot simply be referred to as official founders.

Core Mainnet went live in January 2023. Since then, the network has continued to be developed by the Core Foundation, community members and other contributors.
