What is Clearpool (CPOOL)?

Clearpool is a DeFi protocol for lending and other on-chain yield products. It connects parties looking for capital with parties that want to provide liquidity. A significant part of the platform focuses on institutional and business borrowers.

Clearpool has several lending products. Through Dynamic Pools, users can lend capital to pre-approved institutional borrowers. Clearpool Prime is intended for professional parties that have completed KYC and AML checks. In addition, Clearpool offers Credit Vaults with Revolving Lines of Credit, or RLOCs. These give companies a flexible credit line that they can draw on and repay as needed.

In many products, a lender position is recorded with a cpToken. This token represents the deposited amount and the accrued yield. As a result, lending positions can also be tracked on-chain and used in other applications.

Clearpool also uses credit ratings and other risk data to give lenders information about borrowers. These data can then be used by smart contracts in the operation of the various pools and vaults.

How does Clearpool (CPOOL) work?

Clearpool uses smart contracts to manage lending and other on-chain yield products. The operation differs by product.

In Dynamic Pools, an approved institutional borrower can have its own pool. Lenders deposit capital into this pool and receive cpTokens in return. These tokens represent their share of the pool and the yield they have accrued. The interest rate changes based on how much of the available liquidity is being used by the borrower.

Clearpool Prime works differently. This platform is intended for institutional parties and only approved participants can use it. Both borrowers and lenders must complete KYC and AML checks for this.

With Revolving Lines of Credit, a borrower receives a predetermined credit limit. The borrower can withdraw funds and repay them later when needed. Capital that is temporarily not used by the borrower can automatically be placed in approved money markets, such as Aave or Compound. This allows the unused portion of the capital to also generate yield.

In Dynamic Pools, Clearpool also uses credit ratings from external parties, including Credora. There are also safety mechanisms. For example, when a pool is being used very heavily, new withdrawals can be temporarily restricted. A portion of the interest received is also sent to an insurance fund that can help limit losses in the event of a default.

CPOOL is an ERC-20 token and the utility and governance token of Clearpool. The maximum supply is 1,000,000,000 CPOOL. The token can be staked in oracle pools and is used for rewards and governance within the ecosystem. Clearpool also uses part of its protocol revenue to buy back CPOOL, after which some of these tokens are burned.

Clearpool does not have its own blockchain or consensus mechanism. The protocol runs on several existing blockchains, including Ethereum, Optimism, Base, Arbitrum, Mantle, Plume and Plasma. The final processing and security of transactions therefore depends on the network on which a Clearpool product runs. On Ethereum, for example, this happens via Proof-of-Stake.

Who are the founders of Clearpool?

Clearpool was founded by Robert Alcorn, Jakob Kronbichler and Alessio Quaglini.

Robert Alcorn is co-founder and Chairman of Clearpool. Before Clearpool, he worked among other roles as Executive Director and Head of Repo Trading for Asia-Pacific at First Abu Dhabi Bank. Repo trading involves short-term loans in which securities are used as collateral.

Jakob Kronbichler is co-founder and CEO of Clearpool. Before Clearpool, he worked among other roles as Commercial Director at fintech company Aspire and at Rocket Internet. Within Clearpool, he focuses mainly on the business development and growth of the protocol.

Alessio Quaglini is co-founder and Senior Advisor of Clearpool. He is also CEO of digital asset custodian Hex Trust and previously worked at, among others, First Abu Dhabi Bank, BBVA, Accenture and the Italian financial regulator CONSOB.

The team founded Clearpool to give institutional borrowers access to on-chain financing without every loan having to be fully backed by crypto collateral. The protocol was then expanded into a broader infrastructure for tokenized credit and other on-chain yield products.
