What is Chromia (CHR)?

Chromia is a Layer 1-blockchain built specifically for applications that process a lot of data. The network combines blockchain technology with relational databases. As a result, data can be stored in tables and relationships, just like in traditional databases.

Each dapp can get its own chain on Chromia. This means an application does not have to continuously share computing power and storage with all other apps on the network. That makes it easier to build applications for, for example, games, DeFi, AI and other data-heavy services.

Developers build applications with Rell, a programming language created specifically for Chromia. Rell is similar to languages used for relational databases and makes it possible to query and process complex data directly on the blockchain.

CHR is the native token of Chromia. The token is used, among other things, for staking, paying for network services and rewarding parties that provide infrastructure for dapps and the network.

How does Chromia (CHR) work?

Chromia uses Postchain as its technical foundation. Postchain combines blockchain technology with PostgreSQL, a widely used relational database. Applications are written in Rell and get their own dapp-chain with a database where the application's data is stored. This allows developers to query and process complex data directly on-chain.

Chromia consists of multiple chains that perform different tasks. In addition to dapp-chains, there are system chains for, for example, network management, assets and economic activities. The Economy Chain plays a role, among other things, in CHR and payments within the network.

The network uses EBFT, which stands for eBFT Consensus, to reach agreement on transactions. Provider nodes work together in groups to create and verify new blocks. A block becomes final when more than two thirds of the nodes involved approve it. As a result, the network can continue to operate as long as fewer than one third of these nodes make mistakes or behave maliciously.

Chromia uses FT4 as the standard for fungible tokens and accounts within the ecosystem. CHR is the native token of Chromia Mainnet, but versions of CHR also exist on other networks, including a BEP-20 version on BNB Chain.

CHR is used for network payments, staking and rewarding provider nodes. Developers pay with CHR for the infrastructure needed to run their dapps. Users can also use CHR via Chromia Vault for staking and earn staking rewards in the process.

Who are the founders of Chromia?

Chromia was developed by Henrik Hjelte, Alex Mizrahi and Or Perelman. They are also the founders of ChromaWay, the blockchain company that was founded in 2014 and from which Chromia later emerged.

The three founders were already working on blockchain technology early on. Alex Mizrahi and other members of the team, for example, were involved in research into colored coins, an early method of representing digital assets on Bitcoin. ChromaWay later developed Postchain, the technology on which Chromia is built.

Chromia was developed as an independent public blockchain platform from 2018 onward. Henrik Hjelte serves as CEO, Alex Mizrahi focuses mainly on technical development and Or Perelman is involved in the strategy and growth of the ecosystem.
