Additional Information about Beam (BEAM)

What is Beam (BEAM)?

Beam (BEAM) is a privacy-focused Layer-1 blockchain. The network uses Mimblewimble and is built so transactions are shielded by default, which means amounts and other sensitive details are not visible to outsiders.

Beam is mainly for people who care about privacy, DeFi developers, and miners. BEAM is the network’s native token, and it’s used for transaction fees and rewards within the network.

Beam is used for private payments, confidential assets, a private DEX, confidential NFTs, and atomic swaps. The network also supports confidential DeFi, which simply means DeFi apps can stay as private as possible.

How does Beam (BEAM) work?

Beam uses Mimblewimble and Lelantus-MW to hide transaction amounts and the connection between transactions on its Layer-1 mainnet. Mimblewimble helps keep the data compact, while Lelantus-MW adds another layer of privacy through shielded pools, which are protected collections for transactions.

The network also uses tools like Pedersen commitments and cut-through. These help hide values and remove unnecessary data. It also uses bulletproof color techniques for special and offline payments. With zero-knowledge proofs and cryptographic kernels, Beam can verify transactions without revealing public amounts or addresses.

Beam also supports Confidential Assets, atomic swaps, and confidential smart contracts through the Beam Virtual Machine, or BVM. This machine runs WebAssembly shaders, with files ending in .wasm. Users access it through crypto wallets, using interactive transactions or send-and-forget transactions. That helps keep trading and dApp use private.

Beam runs on its own mainnet, which went live in 2019. The network uses proof of work, meaning computers solve computational work to secure the network and create new blocks. Beam uses a modified version of Equihash called BeamHash, currently BeamHash III, for this. GPU miners provide rewards and network security. BEAM is the native token for fees, miner rewards, and issuing Confidential Assets. There is also an ERC-20 version, Wrapped BEAM or WBEAM, for use on Ethereum through a bidirectional bridge. Issuance started at 100 BEAM per block, with periodic halvings and a maximum supply of 262,800,000 BEAM. During the first five years, 20% of each block reward went to a Beam Treasury. Beam governance is moving to BeamX DAO, where BEAMX is a separate governance token and BEAM can be used in BeamX programs to earn BEAMX.

Who are the founders of Beam?

Beam was launched in 2018 and is led by Alexander Zaidelson, Alex Romanov, and Amir Aaronson. Zaidelson is the CEO and project lead, Romanov is the CTO and technical lead, and Amir Aaronson is the COO.

The project developed from 2018 to the mainnet launch on January 3, 2019. Public profiles show that Alexander Zaidelson has a background in software and had already started other companies before. Alex Romanov is listed as the technical lead of the R&D team.
