What Is Arpa (ARPA)?

Arpa (ARPA) is the project behind ARPA Network. It’s a privacy-focused network for computations that lets data be used together without exposing the raw data.

The network is built for businesses and developers that need to run secure computations on sensitive data. Think of use cases like banks working together, research teams, or ad-tech companies.

ARPA uses secure multiparty computation, or MPC. In this setup, multiple parties perform a computation together, but no one can see anyone else’s input. The ARPA token is used in the ecosystem for payments and to encourage network participants to get involved.

How Does Arpa (ARPA) Work?

Arpa works through secure multiparty computation, or MPC. In this model, the computation is split across multiple computers, so no one can see the original data. The network can handle heavy or sensitive computations off-chain and then return the result to a blockchain in a verifiable way.

The system is split into a consensus layer and a computation layer. The consensus layer handles network coordination and records results on the blockchain. The computation layer is made up of nodes that work together on MPC tasks and verify the computations through the ARPA protocol before the results are sent to the blockchain.

The ARPA token is used for payments within the network, rewards for nodes, and as an economic incentive. The token exists as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Because of that, it can normally also be used in crypto wallets and on exchanges that support this standard.

Who Founded Arpa?

ARPA was founded in 2018 by Felix Xu, Derek Zhang, Yemu Xu, and Jiang Chen. Felix Xu is co-founder and CEO and plays an important role in the strategy and ongoing development of the project. Derek Zhang was described early on as co-founder and president, while Yemu Xu focused in part on growth and business development for the network.

Jiang Chen was part of the original technical team as a co-founder. Alex Su also helped with the early development and was a co-author of the original whitepaper, but is mainly described as a researcher in cryptography, and not clearly as a co-founder.

The team started ARPA as a network for privacy-preserving computations with multi-party computation. Later, the focus shifted to threshold cryptography and applications like verifiable randomness for blockchain applications.
