What is Aerodrome Finance (AERO)?

Aerodrome Finance (AERO) is a decentralized exchange (DEX) and automated market maker (AMM) — in other words, a trading platform where you can swap crypto on the Base blockchain. The goal of the platform is to enable efficient, low-cost, and secure token swaps, while also rewarding users who provide liquidity.

Aerodrome is a DeFi protocol that runs on the Base blockchain, a Layer 2 solution built on top of Ethereum. It combines technologies and concepts from major DeFi platforms (such as Curve, Uniswap, and Velodrome) and is fully optimized for Base. Using this infrastructure ensures low transaction fees and fast processing on Aerodrome. In addition, Aerodrome Finance makes smart use of capital so users can get more out of their funds.

AERO is the native token of Aerodrome and is used for governance, staking (locking in exchange for veAERO), and as a source of rewards.

How does Aerodrome Finance (AERO) work?

Aerodrome Finance operates with an automated market maker (AMM) model combined with a vote-lock governance system, known as the veAERO model (derived from the ve(3,3) model).

Users on the platform can lock their AERO tokens for a certain period of time. In return, they receive the following:

  • Voting rights: To help determine the direction and development of the protocol.
  • Rewards: A share of trading fees and new AERO emissions, depending on voting behavior and lock duration.
  • Incentives: Projects can offer “bribes” to veAERO holders to vote for specific liquidity pools, which generates extra earnings.

This setup creates long-term engagement from users, ensuring a stable supply of liquidity within the ecosystem.
 
The AMM architecture of Aerodrome is based on or inspired by Velodrome V2, which enables efficient and capital-efficient token swaps. This allows traders to benefit from low slippage and competitive rates, while liquidity providers are rewarded for contributing to the network.

Who are the founders of Aerodrome Finance ?

Aerodrome was co-founded in 2023 by Alexander (Alex) Cutler and Tao Watts, together with a team that was previously involved in Velodrome Finance.

Alex Cutler is a developer active in the DeFi space and closely involved with Velodrome and Base. Tao Watts focuses mainly on smart contracts and protocol design within the same ecosystem.

The goal of Aerodrome is to become the main liquidity hub on the Base blockchain and play a major role in the DeFi ecosystem on Base.
