What Is Acurast (ACU)?

Acurast (ACU) is a decentralized compute network. In simple terms, it lets devices like smartphones share computing power and use it for real tasks. The goal is to handle work securely across a distributed network without depending on traditional cloud providers.

The platform is built for jobs that should not rely on a single cloud provider. That includes things like running workloads on edge devices or other kinds of decentralized infrastructure. The ACU token plays a key role in the network. It is used for payments, staking, and participation in the network.

The project runs on its own Substrate chain built specifically for this purpose. Acurast is also connecting with the Polkadot ecosystem so it can communicate with other chains.

How Does Acurast (ACU) Work?

Acurast (ACU) works on its own blockchain built with Substrate. The network uses several components to schedule and verify compute tasks, including an orchestrator, a reputation system, and an attestation service. Together, these pieces make it possible to assign, run, and check tasks within the network.

Because it is built with Substrate, Acurast can run a chain that fits the project’s needs. It also connects to the Polkadot ecosystem, with the option of a parachain slot for communication between different chains. The code and parts of the project are publicly available in the Acurast GitHub repositories.

For consensus, Acurast uses a form of Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS). In this system, nominators and validators work together to secure the network. Nominators play a major role in this setup. The ACU token is used for payments within the network, for staking by validators and nominators, and for broader participation in the network. ACU is also a multichain token with bridging options between networks.

Who Are the Founders of Acurast ?

Acurast was founded in 2022 by Alessandro De Carli and Pascal Brun. They launched the project based on their experience in mobile security and blockchain infrastructure. Both founders still play an important role in the network’s development.

Alessandro De Carli mainly focuses on the strategy and technical vision of Acurast . Pascal Brun is also a co-founder and works on ecosystem development and growth, among other things. Together, they built Acurast to make unused computing power from smartphones available as an alternative to centralized cloud services.

The idea behind Acurast is that smartphones have powerful, well-secured hardware that can be used for tasks like AI computing, automation, and data processing. The founders want to build an open, decentralized compute network that depends less on large data centers.
