What is Rocket Pool (RPL)?

Rocket Pool is a decentralized staking protocol built on the Ethereum blockchain. The protocol is community-owned, meaning it can be used and managed by anyone. Rocket Pool utilizes Ethereum's Proof-of-Stake (PoS) mechanism and is suitable for both smaller stakers (who want to stake a smaller amount) and larger stakers (node operators).

Users can join a network of decentralized node operators or set up their own node with a minimum deposit of 8 ETH. In this case, the remaining 24 ETH is contributed by decentralized stakers. Node operators earn rETH tokens as a reward for staking. Rocket Pool works fully non-custodial, meaning that node operators do not have access to the funds of other users.

  • How does staking work with Rocket Pool?

If you stake ETH through a node operator, you receive an annual return of around 3.5%. If you run your own node, this return can increase to around 8.5% per year, including rewards in the native token of Rocket Pool, RPL. RPL is used as secondary collateral and can be staked to cover any slashes (penalties for bad behavior or node downtime).

Additionally, Rocket Pool offers liquid staking. This means users who stake ETH receive rETH — a token that represents the value of their staked ETH and is tradable. Instead of receiving new rETH as a reward, the exchange rate of rETH relative to ETH increases as staking rewards are generated.

Rocket Pool also offers Smart Nodes, a customized node software that allows anyone to run a node. This system is supported by open-source and verified smart contracts designed to ensure fully non-custodial staking and a high degree of decentralization.

How does Rocket Pool (RPL) work?

Rocket Pool operates based on trustless staking. This means users can stake ETH without needing to trust a central party. The network consists of decentralized nodes that operate fully autonomously. The native token, RPL, is used as collateral to ensure the safety and stability of the protocol.

There are two ways to stake with Rocket Pool: rETH staking and Node Staking. With rETH staking, users can participate starting from just 0.01 ETH. In return, they receive rETH, a token that represents the value of their staked ETH and grows with the staking rewards of the network. This allows users to remain flexible and trade or stake their rETH within other DeFi platforms.

With Node Staking, users can run their own validator by staking a minimum of 8 ETH, while the protocol supplements the remaining 24 ETH from the combined staking pool. This lowers the entry barrier for node operators compared to Ethereum’s standard requirement of 32 ETH. Rocket Pool dynamically adjusts the rewards and fees for node operators based on the number of available validators and the total staked ETH in the network.

Who founded Rocket Pool (RPL)?

Rocket Pool was founded in 2016 by David Rugendyke. He is an Australian software engineer with experience in blockchain technology and other decentralized systems. With Rocket Pool, he aimed to develop a decentralized staking protocol specifically for Ethereum. Rocket Pool was designed to be accessible to everyone, as users on Rocket Pool can decide how much Ethereum they want to stake, unlike Ethereum, where a standard minimum of 32 ETH is required to run a validator.

Rugendyke transformed Rocket Pool into a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), which is managed by a broader community of developers and contributors. This community plays an active role in the growth and further development of the project.
