What Is Theta Network (THETA)?

Theta Network (THETA) is a blockchain project built for decentralized video streaming and edge computing. In simple terms, it lets users share bandwidth and computing power to help deliver video content.

The idea is to make streaming faster and more affordable, especially in places where traditional CDNs do not perform as well. CDNs are networks that deliver content to users quickly. Theta is designed to connect content platforms, viewers, and media app developers.

The network uses two tokens. THETA is the token for governance and staking. That helps secure the network. TFUEL is the token used to pay nodes for work like video relay and compute. In return, participants earn rewards for contributing their resources.

How Does Theta Network (THETA) Work?

Theta Network works through three types of nodes: validators, guardian nodes, and edge nodes. Each one has a specific job in the network. Edge nodes share video data and earn TFUEL for relaying content. Guardian nodes watch over validators and help keep the network secure. Validators create blocks and support consensus.

The network runs on its own blockchain, which is built for speed and high transaction volume. Its design includes a metachain and potential subchains to improve scalability. Transactions and payments for content relay and compute are handled on the Theta blockchain. The network also supports smart contracts and apps built on top of the chain.

For consensus, Theta uses a BFT-like layer, similar to Tendermint. BFT means the network can keep running smoothly even if some nodes make mistakes. Theta also uses a two-layer security model with validators and guardian nodes. It is built to combine strong security with high performance for streaming. Work is also underway on EdgeCloud for distributed GPU compute, for things like AI and 3D rendering. TFUEL is used for gas, video relay, and payments within EdgeCloud, while THETA is used for staking and governance.

Who Are the Founders of Theta Network?

Theta Network was announced in November 2017 and was founded by Mitch Liu and Jieyi Long. An early token sale took place in January 2018. Both founders have backgrounds in technology and media, and they started Theta to decentralize video delivery.

Their goal was to replace the traditional centralized model for video distribution. Instead, they built a network where users share bandwidth and computing power. That way, content platforms and viewers can benefit from faster and cheaper streaming.
