Additional Information about Taiko (TAIKO)

What Is Taiko (TAIKO)?

Taiko is an open-source Layer-2 solution for Ethereum built as an Ethereum-equivalent zk-rollup, also known as a Type-1 zkEVM. It is designed to make Ethereum more scalable while preserving EVM opcodes and Ethereum's security. Its main purpose is to help move existing Ethereum dApps to an L2 with almost no code changes, which can lower transaction costs and make it easier for developers to switch.

Taiko focuses on general-purpose smart contracts and combines developer-friendliness with more decentralization in transaction ordering. The L1 environment plays an important role here, because L1 block producers are involved in ordering L2 transactions. So the main use case is running existing Ethereum apps at lower cost, with the same EVM compatibility and security guarantees.

How Does Taiko (TAIKO) Work?

Taiko works as a Type-1 zkEVM that processes transactions on Layer 2 and then sends proofs and protocol data to Ethereum Layer 1. This allows the network to inherit Ethereum's consensus and finality while the actual L2 functionality runs on Taiko . In other words, it is not a separate base layer, but a system that builds on Ethereum for certainty and security.

The technical design centers on a Based Contestable Rollup, or BCR for short, and a multi-proof prover market with ZK-EVM circuits that aim for full EVM opcode coverage. The stack includes the Taiko client and taiko-geth, protocol smart contracts for L1↔L2 bridges and verifiers, and off-chain provers that generate valid proofs.

Taiko uses a 'based' sequencing model, where L1 block proposers help order L2 transactions. At the same time, a contestable/prover market handles disputes. Disputes are settled on-chain through the protocol contracts, with staking and bond mechanisms as part of that process. The TAIKO token plays a role in protocol-level economic functions, like governance and incentives within the prover and contestable proof market, while ETH is used to pay gas.

Who Are the Founders of Taiko ?

Taiko was founded by Daniel Wang and Brecht Devos. Daniel Wang is the project's co-founder and CEO.

Brecht Devos is co-founder and CTO and leads the ZK R&D team within Taiko . Other team members are also named publicly, but the founders most often mentioned are Daniel Wang and Brecht Devos.
