Additional Information about Sky (SKY)

What is Sky (SKY)?

Sky is a DeFi ecosystem that emerged from MakerDAO. The protocol revolves around USDS, the native stablecoin of Sky, and SKY, the token for governance and staking.

USDS is the successor to DAI and is designed to stay around the value of one US dollar. Users can hold, send, and use USDS in different parts of the Sky ecosystem.

An important product is sUSDS. Users can convert USDS to sUSDS to gain access to the Sky Savings Rate. This interest rate is set by Sky Governance and is paid from protocol revenue. In addition, there are other products, such as stUSDS and Sky Vaults.

SKY holders can participate in the governance of the protocol. Decisions on, among other things, the Sky Savings Rate, risk parameters, and protocol changes are made through governance on the blockchain.

Sky also works with a network of specialized Sky Agents. These independent components can deploy protocol capital for various financial strategies and products.

How does Sky (SKY) work?

Sky works with smart contracts on Ethereum. These contracts handle, among other things, the issuance of USDS, saving via sUSDS, staking of SKY, and governance of the protocol.

USDS is the native stablecoin of Sky. Users can convert USDS to sUSDS to gain access to the Sky Savings Rate. sUSDS is an ERC-4626 token whose redemption value in USDS can increase over time through this interest rate.

stUSDS works differently. Users who deposit USDS into this module provide capital that allows SKY stakers to borrow USDS against their staked SKY. The yield of stUSDS therefore depends, among other things, on how much of this capital is actually borrowed.

SKY is an ERC-20 governance token on Ethereum. Users can stake SKY in the Staking Engine. From the same position, they can delegate governance voting rights, receive staking rewards, and borrow USDS with their SKY as collateral.

The staking rewards are supported by a buyback mechanism. Sky uses protocol revenue to buy back SKY on the open market and can then distribute these tokens among participants in the Staking Engine.

The Staking Engine has no fixed lock-up period. Users can unstake their SKY again, as long as their position does not have an outstanding loan that would otherwise become insufficiently collateralized.

MKR can be converted to SKY at a base ratio of 1 MKR for 24,000 SKY. This conversion is now subject to a Delayed Upgrade Penalty, which means that MKR holders who switch later receive gradually less SKY.

SKY has a maximum supply of approximately 23.46 billion tokens. The issuance of new tokens is permanently disabled. Because the protocol can simultaneously buy back SKY on the market, the available circulating supply can therefore decrease.

Sky does not have its own blockchain. The core contracts and SKY token run on Ethereum and therefore use the security and consensus of Ethereum.

Who are the founders of Sky?

Sky emerged from MakerDAO, which was founded by Rune Christensen.

Christensen began developing Maker around 2014 and played a central role in the design of the protocol and the DAI stablecoin. MakerDAO then grew into one of the first major DeFi protocols on Ethereum.

In the years that followed, Christensen developed the Endgame plan, a major restructuring of the Maker ecosystem. As part of this, Sky was launched in September 2024, with USDS as the successor to DAI and SKY as the successor to MKR.

Sky is not governed like a traditional company led by a single founder. Important changes to the protocol are determined through decentralized governance by SKY holders and other participants in the ecosystem.
