What is Plasma (XPL)?

Plasma is a Layer-1 blockchain built specifically for stablecoins and everyday digital payments. The protocol should not be confused with the Layer-2 scaling solution of the same name from 2017, but is a new, standalone network focused on making digital dollars scalable.

The network aims for deep USDT liquidity, fast settlement, and direct support for account integrations and payment cards. For consumers, Plasma is building the 'Plasma One' app, which lets users easily store, send, and spend stablecoins. The network is also optimized for remittances (sending money abroad) and integrations with traditional financial partners.

How does Plasma (XPL) work?

Plasma is its own Layer-1 blockchain that is specifically set up for stablecoin transactions. The network is fully EVM-compatible, which makes it easy for developers to move over existing Ethereum tools and smart contracts.

A unique feature of Plasma is that USDT transactions can happen with zero network fees through a built-in paymaster system. For transactions that do have fees, users can optionally pay them in stablecoins themselves instead of the native token, which lowers the barrier for end users a lot.

The network is secured through its own PlasmaBFT consensus mechanism and runs on Proof of Stake. Validators stake XPL to verify transactions. The network also has a native Bitcoin bridge to use BTC liquidity within the network.

XPL is the native token of Plasma. The original supply at launch was 10 billion XPL. In addition to network security and transaction fees, XPL is issued as a staking reward, with annual inflation starting at 5% and declining to 3% over time.

Who are the founders of Plasma?

Plasma was founded by Paul Faecks, who also serves as the project’s CEO. Faecks has a strong background in institutional crypto infrastructure and previously co-founded and served as CEO of Alloy.

The project is backed by major investors and venture capital firms from the Web3 sector, including Founders Fund, Framework Ventures, and Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino.
