Additional Information about Pi Network (PI)

What Is Pi Network (PI)?

Pi Network (PI) is a mobile-friendly blockchain ecosystem with a native cryptocurrency designed to make crypto easier for everyday users to access. It does this, among other things, through low-energy "mining" on phones and by building a community and app ecosystem around real-world use cases.

The core idea behind Pi Network is that verified human participants, called Pioneers, can earn Pi and take part in a permissioned mainnet rollout. The idea is that Pi can later be used inside apps and services.

The main goal of Pi Network is inclusion: lowering the barrier for non-technical users so they can easily join a peer-to-peer economy. Within this ecosystem, Pi is positioned as a digital currency meant for payments and in-app use once the move to the mainnet phase and the verification processes are complete.

How Does Pi Network (PI) Work?

Pi Network works through a technical design based on the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP) and Stellar Core software, but adapted for the project and focused on a permissioned-to-open mainnet rollout. The infrastructure includes node software, including a dockerized pi-node, testnet and mainnet endpoints, and developer tools like APIs and SDKs that are meant to support dApps.

The Pi-blockchain runs on its own mainnet based on a fork or derivative of Stellar Core, so it is not a token on another chain. Pioneer balances are migrated to mainnet status after KYC and other verification processes.

For consensus, Pi uses a modified, federated, quorum-based version of SCP that is tuned for mobile and consumer-focused node participation. Validators run SCP-like nodes that validate transactions within the permissioned-to-open migration model. The PI token itself acts as the native currency of the Pi blockchain and is meant to encourage network growth, reward Pioneers, subject to KYC and migration, and serve as a medium of exchange and unit of account within the ecosystem.

Who Are the Founders of Pi Network?

Pi Network was founded by Nicolas Kokkalis, Chengdiao Fan, and Vincent McPhillip. Nicolas Kokkalis is presented as the technical lead of the project and Chengdiao Fan as the product lead, while Vincent McPhillip was part of the original founding team.

According to the official descriptions, Kokkalis and Fan are the founder-executives who continue to lead the project from a technical and product standpoint. Vincent McPhillip left the team in 2021.

That setup shows how the roles within the core team are divided during Pi's development and rollout.
