Additional Information about Lombard (BARD)

What Is Lombard (BARD)?

Lombard is a crypto project that brings Bitcoin into DeFi and other on-chain apps. Its main product is LBTC, a token that represents a staked Bitcoin position. Users deposit BTC with Lombard, and it gets staked through the Babylon protocol. In return, they receive LBTC, which can be used across different blockchain networks.

LBTC can be lent, used as collateral, added to liquidity pools, or moved to other supported blockchains. At the same time, the underlying BTC can earn staking rewards. That yield shows up in the exchange rate between LBTC and BTC, so one LBTC can represent more BTC over time.

In addition to LBTC, Lombard also offers BTC.b, a Bitcoin token without built-in yield, plus other products for lending, yield, and using Bitcoin from institutional Wallets. The project also builds bridges and technical infrastructure that let protocols integrate Bitcoin products. So Lombard is not limited to Ethereum and supports multiple networks.

BARD is the governance and utility token of Lombard. It can be used to vote on protocol changes, access certain products, and help support the security of cross-chain transfers. Users can stake BARD for this and receive stBARD in return.

How Does Lombard (BARD) Work?

Lombard works by using several technical components to turn Bitcoin into tokens that can move across multiple blockchains. When a user deposits BTC, the Security Consortium and an independent verification layer called the Bascule Drawbridge check that deposit. After approval, LBTC is issued on the chosen blockchain. LBTC represents the deposited Bitcoin and can generate yield because the underlying BTC is staked through Babylon.

Coordination happens through the Lombard Ledger. This is a separate Cosmos appchain with CometBFT consensus where deposits, issuances, redemptions, and cross-chain transfers are recorded. The Security Consortium is made up of several independent parties that have to approve these actions together. That means no single party can move the underlying Bitcoin or issue new LBTC on its own.\br\brLBTC is available on Ethereum and several other blockchains. To move LBTC between supported networks, Lombard uses Chainlink CCIP, among other tools. During a cross-chain transfer, the tokens are first burned on the original network and then reissued on the destination network. Both Chainlink CCIP and the Security Consortium have to approve the transfer separately. An extra security layer from Symbiotic checks that the burn and reissue happen correctly.

LBTC can be traded, lent, used as collateral, or added to liquidity pools within DeFi. The staking rewards from the underlying BTC are reflected in the exchange rate between LBTC and BTC. Because of that, one LBTC can represent more BTC over time.

BARD is the governance and utility token of Lombard and has a fixed maximum supply of one billion tokens. BARD holders can vote on topics like fees, the makeup of the Security Consortium, and the protocol's future development. Users can also stake BARD and receive stBARD for doing so. The staked tokens act as economic collateral for securing cross-chain transfers. When these transfers are completed correctly, stakers can earn rewards. In cases of serious errors or abuse, part of the staked collateral can be taken through slashing.

Who Founded Lombard?

Lombard was founded in 2024 by Jacob Phillips.

Before Lombard, Phillips worked as a partner at Polychain Capital and as COO at Perennial Labs, among other roles. That gave him experience in crypto investing, DeFi, and building financial protocols.

The broader Lombard team includes people who previously worked at organizations like Polychain, Coinbase, Ripple, Maple Finance, and Argent. With Lombard, the team wants to make Bitcoin more actively usable within DeFi, for things like staking, lending, and other on-chain applications.
