Additional Information about IOTA (IOTA)

What Is IOTA (IOTA)?

IOTA is a crypto project with its own digital network and native coin, also called IOTA. The network was built to move digital value and information quickly and at relatively low cost. IOTA is not just for regular crypto payments. It can also be used for things like digital identities, proof of ownership, financial services, product registration, and tracking goods through a supply chain. Developers can build apps and smart contracts for this. A smart contract is a digital program that automatically carries out an agreement. For example, a payment can be released automatically once a delivery is confirmed. IOTA supports smart contracts in the Move programming language. There is also a separate IOTA EVM layer where apps can run that are similar to Ethereum apps. The IOTA coin has several uses. You can use the coin to pay transaction fees, to stake, and to send digital value to other users. IOTA does not have a fixed maximum supply. New coins are added as a reward for securing the network, while part of the transaction fees paid is burned.

How Does IOTA (IOTA) Work?

IOTA works like a shared digital ledger. When someone sends IOTA or uses an app on the network, that action is sent through the network as a transaction. Computers called validators then check whether the transaction is valid. For example, they look at whether the sender has enough IOTA and whether the same coins are not being spent twice. Once enough validators agree, the transaction is approved and permanently recorded.

IOTA uses delegated-proof-of-stake for this, often shortened to DPoS. IOTA holders can delegate their coins to a validator. This helps that validator secure the network. The coins still belong to the user. In return, the validator and the users who delegate their IOTA can receive rewards. This system uses much less computing power than Proof of Work, the system used by Bitcoin, for example. With IOTA, computers do not have to keep solving complex math problems just to process transactions. IOTA is also designed to handle many transactions in parallel. Instead of processing every transaction strictly one by one, multiple transactions can be handled at the same time. You can compare it to a store with several checkout lanes instead of one long line. This is how IOTA tries to stay fast and scalable as the network gets busier. For every transaction or smart contract action, you pay a small amount of IOTA as a transaction fee, also called gas. These fees pay for the network's computing power and storage and help prevent abuse and spam.

Who Are the Founders of IOTA?

IOTA was founded in 2015 by four people: David Sønstebø was a Norwegian entrepreneur and one of the main people behind the project. Dominik Schiener is a German entrepreneur who focused mainly on business development, strategy, and growth of the IOTA ecosystem. Sergey Ivancheglo, also known in the crypto world as Come-from-Beyond, was involved in the technical development of the original IOTA protocol. Serguei Popov is a mathematician who played an important role in the theoretical and mathematical foundation of IOTA. The four founders started IOTA with the idea that more and more devices, companies, and people would automatically exchange digital value and data with each other. At first, the project was strongly focused on the Internet of Things: a world where vehicles, sensors, and machines, for example, can carry out small transactions on their own. IOTA has changed a lot technically since it was founded. Because of that, a lot of older explanations of IOTA no longer fully describe how the current network works. Today, IOTA is a programmable crypto network with validators, staking, transaction fees, and smart contracts.
