What Is Harmony (ONE)?

Harmony is a public Layer-1 blockchain protocol built for fast, secure, and scalable decentralized applications and open finance. It was designed to solve scalability and transaction throughput limits through effective sharding, secure randomness, and a low-latency consensus design. As a result, Harmony aims to support dApps, cross-chain assets, and decentralized financial applications with high throughput and low fees.

Harmony uses the native token ONE for network activity and economic incentives. Among other uses, the token pays transaction fees, supports staking and delegation, and helps enable rewards and on-chain governance. By combining sharding with this token model, Harmony focuses on practical scalability for blockchain applications and financial services.

How Does Harmony (ONE) Work?

Harmony works through a layered sharding architecture that combines network, transaction, and state sharding with a cross-shard protocol and a beacon chain for secure randomness and validator coordination. The beacon chain generates verifiable randomness and assigns validators to specific shards, while shard chains process transactions in parallel. Cross-shard communication then helps keep state consistent across shards.

The consensus model is a PoS-based validation system with a variant of Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance for block finality. Within shards, Harmony uses a Fast Byzantine Fault Tolerance (FBFT) protocol, and BLS aggregate signatures support efficient multi-signature commits. Validators stake ONE through the on-chain staking mechanism, which determines selection, rewards, and slashing rules. The protocol also uses secure randomness based on VRF, BLS multi-signatures, and a Go implementation, with compatibility for Ethereum tooling for smart contracts and on-chain staking and validator smart contracts.

Who Are the Founders of Harmony?

Harmony was founded by Stephen Tse. He is publicly identified as the project founder and CEO and is considered the central figure behind the initiative.

Along with Stephen Tse, the early core of Harmony included several engineers and team members who helped with the initial development. In project descriptions and interviews, Stephen Tse is explicitly credited as the founder of Harmony.
