What Is Citrea (CTR)?

Citrea is a blockchain project built around Bitcoin. Its goal is to make Bitcoin more useful for financial applications through a ZK-rollup that is compatible with the EVM. In practice, that means it adds a smart layer on top of Bitcoin, so developers can build smart contracts and financial products using Bitcoin liquidity.

The project mainly targets financial markets and capital allocation within the Bitcoin ecosystem. Its native token, CTR, is used for participation and decision-making in the network. In that sense, Citrea is trying to connect Bitcoin as a base layer with more advanced smart contract features.

How Does Citrea (CTR) Work?

Citrea works by using zero-knowledge rollup technology. That means transactions are processed off Bitcoin first, then tied back to Bitcoin with proofs. The network also uses BitVM-like mechanisms to connect those proofs to Bitcoin. Its execution layer is EVM-compatible as a Type II zkEVM, so existing Ethereum tools and smart contracts can be used. The native gas unit on the network is cBTC.

As a separate execution layer, Citrea depends on Bitcoin for finality and data anchoring. In other words, rollup transactions and proofs are recorded publicly on Bitcoin. This lets the network use Bitcoin’s security for final confirmation and data storage. For Citrea Mainnet, there are also dedicated RPC endpoints and a block explorer, so users can view and verify transactions and blocks.

In this setup, the rollup handles execution and generates proofs, while Bitcoin provides final status and data anchoring. CTR also helps with coordination and governance across the network. By staking CTR, holders receive xCTR. That gives them voting rights and influence over the Governance Treasury, as well as how resources are distributed across the ecosystem.

Who Are the Founders of Citrea?

Citrea was built by Chainway Labs and is being developed by a team from that company. The main founders and contributors mentioned are Orkun Mahir Kilic, co-founder and CEO of Chainway Labs and co-creator of Citrea, and Murat Karademir, co-founder and COO of Chainway Labs.

Along with Kilic and Karademir, the project materials also mention other technical co-founders and contributors. That shows Citrea was started and is still being developed by a team of developers and technical specialists.
