As blockchain networks are typically isolated from external data sources, Chainlink provides a reliable and secure solution to bring off-chain data onto the blockchain. The native cryptocurrency of the Chainlink network is called LINK. It is used to incentivize node operators, who are responsible for retrieving data from external sources and validating its accuracy before feeding it into the blockchain.
Chainlink operates through a network of decentralized oracles, which are essentially nodes that retrieve and verify data from external sources. These oracles act as middleware between blockchain smart contracts and the real world, enabling smart contracts to interact with data that exists outside the blockchain ecosystem. Chainlink employs a unique approach called "off-chain reporting" to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data it provides. This approach involves multiple independent node operators retrieving data from various sources, aggregating it, and submitting it to the blockchain. By using multiple nodes and aggregating the data, Chainlink aims to mitigate the risk of a single point of failure or manipulation. Chainlink's consensus mechanism, known as the Chainlink Network Consensus (CLC), relies on a reputation system to determine the reliability of node operators. Node operators stake LINK tokens as collateral to participate in the network, and their reputation and potential rewards depend on their performance and the quality of the data they provide. Additionally, Chainlink utilizes tamper-proof hardware known as Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) to enhance data security and protect against manipulation. These TEEs ensure that data is securely transmitted and processed within the node operators' hardware, preventing unauthorized access or modification.
